Princeton upsets Rosewood in four

PRINCETON -- Nicole Hargis and Sarah Gibbs combined for 13 kills as Princeton upended Rosewood 12-25, 26-24, 25-15, 25-14 in a key Class 1-A Carolina Conference match Thursday afternoon.

The victory assured the Bulldogs (12-9) of fourth place in the league at 7-5. However, the loss dropped the Eagles (15-5) into a second-place with North Johnston at 8-4 heading into next week's conference tournament.

The Carolina Conference has just two berths available for the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs, which begin Oct. 26.

"The girls played an awesome game; got under every ball and made great passes," Princeton coach Trudy Rast said. "Everyone served good and our net players kept going up strong. Our girls played hard all four games."

Hargis and Gibbs also combined for five blocks, and Hargis added two service aces. Stephanie Daughtry, Kaitlyn Haddock and Brittany Rose combined for five kills. Rose had five digs on defense, while Daughtry chipped in with two.

Kristen Parker notched nine aces in the four-set match.

"We played great in game one, but then we did not play together as a group in games two through four," Rosewood coach Jennifer Cochran said.

Jessica Hill led the Eagles with 10 kills, while Katy Morris provided eight. Clare Narron and Abigail Barrow each had four kills.

Barrow dished out 14 assists, while Narron handed out nine.

Stephanie Rhodes and Morgan Wheeler each had three digs on defense.

Seedings were not available for the conference tournament as of press time.

Saints claim ECC

sweep against Warriors

Charlie Garten collected a match-high 18 kills in Southern Wayne's 25-20, 25-21, 25-22 victory against archrival Eastern Wayne in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play Thursday.

Garten had seven kills in the first set.

"That was probably the scrappiest we've ever played," Saints coach Brian Bandy said. "They moved to every ball that they could get to and didn't let anything hit the floor.

"We still made our mistakes, but that's probably the best match we've had all year."

Southern Wayne (3-11 EPC) travels Goldsboro next Tuesday.

Eastern Wayne statistics were not available as of press time.

Hawks earn fourth

EPC 2-A title

LAGRANGE -- North Lenoir completed its fourth straight unbeaten season in Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference play with a 25-9, 25-18, 25-17 win at home over Tarboro on Thursday.

The Hawks (10-0 EPC) carry a 20-1 record into next week's conference tournament.

North Lenoir's Brittany Sanders was 12-of-13 from the service line with 11 kills, while teammate Randi Moulton had nine kills. Shannon Plymouth had a perfect, 14-for-14 effort on serve with three blocks as Leslie Oliver added five kills and one block.

Cougars fall

in five sets

KINSTON -- Goldsboro's Shemika Hardy had seven digs as the Cougars battled in a 25-17, 25-20, 14-25, 23-25, 15-9 loss at Kinston on Thursday.

Ashelyn James added four blocks and three aces for the Cougars (3-15, 2-13 Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference), while Camille Early had three blocks and one ace.

Goldsboro hosts Southern Wayne on Tuesday.

Panthers sweep

Spring Creek

KENLY -- North Johnston concluded regular season play with a 25-22, 25-14, 25-18 sweep over Spring Creek at home on Thursday.

The win improves the Panthers (15-7 overall) to 8-4 in the Class 1-A Carolina Conference heading into the conference tournament next week.

Eagles defend

Carolina 1-A title

Rosewood seized its second straight Carolina 1-A Conference championship with a 25-15, 20-25, 25-14 victory against Princeton.

The Eagles (19-1) finished 11-1 against league opposition.

Cynthia Peedin led the Bulldogs with four kills.

Tiesha Williams served four aces, while Brittany Atkinson contributed three aces.

Princeton (8-10) concluded the season 7-5 in conference play.

Falcons post

home win

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock's Leigh Smith served on 27 points and notched four aces to help lead the Golden Falcons to a 25-13, 20-25, 27-25 win at home over South Central on Thursday.

The win improved Aycock (14-2 overall) to 11-1 in the Eastern 3-A Carolina Conference play.

Laura Thigpen added five digs for the Falcons, who travel to Eastern Wayne on Tuesday.

North Lenoir

finishes strong

LAGRANGE -- North Lenoir's Kaitlyn Howard had four kills and was seven-of-seven from the service line in the Hawks 25-20, 25-19 win at home over Tarboro in their season finale.

Brynne Fulghum added a 15-for-15 effort on serve for the Hawks (13-8), who finished at 7-3 in the Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference.

Panthers top

Gators in three

KENLY -- North Johnston defeated Spring Creek 19-25, 25-13, 25-16 on Thursday in both teams regular season finale.

The Panthers finished at 10-8 overall and 7-5 in the Carolina 1-A Conference.

Warriors need

three to beat Saints

Eastern Wayne defeated Southern Wayne 25-20, 18-25, 25-20 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play Thursday.
