Chargers win, but loose another player
HENDERSON -- Wayne Country Day picked up another important conference victory Thursday afternoon, but lost its third starter nearly midway through the second half.
Keeper Ryan Ford sustained a concussion as the Chargers held on to blank Kerr-Vance Academy 1-0 in Classes 1-A/2-A Coastal Plains Independent Conference action. Head coach Michael Taylor said Ford might have sustained a broken jaw, and is seeing an oral surgeon today.
Ford had six saves before Chris Reed assumed the duties in goal. Reed recorded seven stops for the Chargers, who climbed to 6-2 in the CPIC and 13-4-1 overall.
"Chris came in and did a good job," Taylor said. "The guys on the bench came in and did a great job. Everybody stepped up their game last night. It was a total team effort."
Kevin Logan collected the game's lone goal in the opening minute off a corner kick from Reed.
Wayne Country Day returns to action next Tuesday at Greenfield, the five-time defending N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A champion. Ford and Sam Steed (broken arm) will miss the game, but Taylor said that David Wilson (sprained ankle) might return.
Beddingfield shuts
down Eagles' attack
Jose Aguilera converted a first-half penalty kick and Cesar Reya contributed a second-half goal in Wilson Beddingfield's 2-0, non-conference victory against Rosewood at Branch Pope Field.
"We had a couple of opportunities early on that we missed and we made a mistake in the box there at the end of the first half," Rosewood coach Daniel Mitchell said.
Aguilera's PK gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Reya provided an insurance goal five minutes into the second half.
"We never got on track, had any flow to the game," Mitchell said. "Beddingfield did a good job pressuring us, limiting our passing. We got a little frustrated.
"I'm disappointed in the way we played and conducted ourselves in the game."
Rosewood (9-8-1) entertains North Johnston next Monday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
