Warriors dominate league meet

WINTERVILLE -- Eastern Wayne's boys cross country team turned in a perfect score of 15 -- taking the top five spots in a five-team, Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference meet at Boyd Lee Park in Winterville on Tuesday.
Running in his first meet, senior Justin Bernel (18:15) took first, while Michael Lawrence (18:16), Matt Interrante (18:16), Will Collins (18:18 and Drew Ziccardi (18:41) took the next four spots.
South Central took second with 49 team points, while Washington (94), Southern Wayne (114) and Goldsboro (118) rounded out the team scoring.
Goldsboro's top runner, Adrian Lewis (20:16) finished 15th, while Southern Wayne's Patrick Eason (22:18) took 24th.
In the girls meet, Eastern Wayne competed without two key runners and took first with 28 team points. South Central (32) and Goldsboro (69) were the only other two to have enough runners to figure in the team scoring.
Brittany Ham finished third for the Warrior girls with a time of 22:19. Natalie Taylor emerged with a 22:26 -- good for fourth.
Goldsboro's Danielle Irby finished eighth with a 24:51.
Eastern Wayne runs at the Tanglewood Invitational in Winston-Salem this Saturday.
