Golden Falcons fall to Eagles in a tough one

VANCEBORO -- West Craven, for the second straight week, escaped a last-minute comeback attempt in Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Confer-ence play.

Char-les B. Aycock drove inside the Eagles' red zone in the final two minutes Friday evening, but fumbled away a potential game-winning score. The turnover allowed West Craven to prevail 16-13 and extend its ECC unbeaten streak to 29 games.

The Golden Falcons tumbled to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the ECC heading into next Friday's home contest against West Carteret.

Aycock climbed within 9-7 in the final quarter on Wesley Whitley's one-yard run. The Eagles answered with a 99-yard kickoff return from Charles Morgan to make it a two-possession game.

Chris Byrd cashed in the Golden Falcons' second touchdown of the quarter, a two-yard run, with 8:52 remaining in regulation. Neither team threatened to score again until Aycock's costly turnover -- its second of the game -- with 1:35 on the clock.

The Golden Falcons are 1-2 on the road.

Shonte Barnes churned out 142 yards on 29 totes. It marked Barnes' fourth 100-yard outing of the season.

Cortez Gilbert and Dontae Taylor emerged the defensives leader with 10 tackles apiece. Keith Cobb, Turner Wood and Korie Lewis each recorded seven stops.
