Princeton trips Panthers

PRINCETON -- Princeton tightened the Class 1-A Carolina Conference standings with a 25-16, 25-27, 25-21, 25-23 victory against county archrival North Johnston on Tuesday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (11-8) climbed to 6-4 in the conference and moved to within one game of second place. The Panthers lost their third league contest fell into a second-place tie with Rosewood. The teams meet Thursday afternoon at Rosewood.

"I was so excited with the girls," first-year Princeton coach Trudy Rast said. "They came out playing strong and showed we wanted to win. We had great coverage on the back row and excellent net play from Sarah (Gibbs) and Nicole (Hargis).

"We never gave up and played with the desire and intensity that I hope to see next week."

Gibbs and Hargis combined for 15 kills and seven blocks in the four-set win. Stephanie Daughtry added three kills, three aces and three digs. Kaitlyn Haddock and Brittany Rose combined for two aces and three kills.

Melissa Worley dished out 18 assists and recorded a team-high five digs on defense.

Princeton travels to defending Carolina champion Farmville Central next Tuesday.

North Lenoir

close to EPC title

LAGRANGE -- North Lenoir moved within one victory of clinching a share of its fourth consecutive Eastern Plains 2-A Conference regular-season title with a 25-11, 25-13, 25-12 victory against Greene Central at Wooten Gymnasium.

The Hawks (17-1) remained unbeaten in seven league outings and extended their EPC regular-season win streak to 37 matches. They continue play at home Thursday against North Pitt.

Outside hitter Leslie Oliver paced North Lenoir with 10 kills and three blocks. Randi Moulton provided nine kills and earned 21 team points on serve.

Chanee Lynch dished out 30 assists.

C.B. Aycock sinks

Vikings in ECC

KINSTON -- Lindsey Newman delivered a match-high 13 kills as Charles B. Aycock dominated Kinston 25-17, 25-14, 25-14 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play Tuesday.

The Golden Falcons (13-2) improved to 10-1 in the ECC and remained one-half game behind league leader West Craven. The two teams meet Thursday in Pikeville with first place on the line.

Stephanie Ballance and Kandace Burroughs provided seven kills apiece for Aycock, which picked up its 50th ECC victory in 56 tries.

Chrissy Setliff and Karlie West each served seven aces.

West Carteret

holds off Cougars

Goldsboro played West Carteret tough for four sets in a 19-25, 25-27, 25-22, 23-25 loss in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play Tuesday afternoon.

The Cougars (2-14, 2-12) entertain South Central on Thursday.

Halifax hands

Chargers a loss

ROANOKE RAPIDS -- Halifax Academy, which merged into the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference this season, swept Wayne Country Day 25-9, 25-16, 25-23 on Tuesday afternoon.

The Chargers played solid defense and collected 54 digs as a team. Heather Daughtery and Amanda Benton had 12 and 11 digs, respectively. Amanda Knutson and Stephanie Knutson combined for 17 digs.

Laura Ziemer emerged the top kill leader with four, while Amanda Benton provided three. Ziemer and Benton combined for three blocks.

Daughtery served two aces, while Erin Taylor added one.

Wayne Country Day (7-9, 4-2 CPIC) entertains Greenfield on Thursday.

Rosewood takes

non-league win

Clare Narron provided six kills and handed out three assists in Rosewood's 25-8, 25-10, 25-14 non-conference victory against Southern Wayne on Tuesday afternoon.

Jessica Hill added nine kills and one block for the Eagles, who improved to 13-4 overall. Rosewood continues play at home Thursday against Carolina 1-A opponent North Johnston.

Stephanie Rhodes and Katy Morris combined for five kills and two blocks. Morgan Wheeler, Kelli Gurley and Kasey Grey had two kills apiece.

Abigail Barrow dished out four assists.

North Lenoir

sweeps G. Central

LAGRANGE -- North Lenoir climbed above the .500 mark in Eastern Plains 2-A Conference play with a 27-25, 25-19 win against Greene Central at Wooten Gymnasium.

The Hawks scored 13 points with Catelyn Howard on serve and 10 with Brynne Fulghum on serve.

North Lenoir (9-8, 4-3 EPC) entertains North Pitt on Thursday.

Amber Morris and Rosemary Carmon each had five kills for the Rams, who fell to 2-13 overall and 1-6 in the league. Greene Central entertains SouthWest Edgecombe at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Aycock thumps

KINSTON -- Rusti Talton served a match-high nine aces as C.B. Aycock swept Kinston 25-12, 25-11 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play Tuesday afternoon.

Shelly Lancaster provided four kills.

The Golden Falcons (11-2, 8-1 ECC) entertain West Craven at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Halifax upends

W. Country Day

ROANOKE RAPIDS -- Stephanie Sykes recorded three kills and three digs in Wayne Country Day's 25-17, 25-11 loss against Halifax Academy in a Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A encounter.

Kayla Flanagan contributed two aces and two digs. Ellen Elmore collected one kill and one dig.

Emily Best served one ace and added a dig.

The Chargers (5-7, 2-3 CPIC) play host to Greenfield on Thursday.

Unbeaten Eagles

march past Saints

Roxie Phillips handed out three assists and added an service ace as Rosewood swept Southern Wayne 25-22, 25-22 in a non-conference contest Tuesday afternoon.

The Eagles remained unbeaten in 17 matches.

Kasie Braswell added two aces and one kill, while Aubrey Reinhard notched one ace and one assist.

Rosewood returns to action Thursday at home against North Johnston.
