Mount Olive volley ball Defeats Shaw 3-0

RALEIGH -- Heidi Busch and Anna Luft served six aces apiece and Mount Olive served a season-high 20 aces as a team in a 30-24, 30-21, 30-14 non-conference victory against Shaw University on Tuesday evening.

Busch finished with 13 kills to extend her streak to 25 consecutive matches with at least 10 kills, while Luft added 11 kills.

Mount Olive (16-7) hit .337 as a team for the match, including a .362 hitting percentage over the final two games. Colby Mangum added seven kills, three aces and a match-high three blocks for the Trojans. Sara Christie and Ashley Napoles served two aces apiece, while Candice Collins had one ace. The 20 aces surpasses the Trojans' previous season high of 14, set Friday against Alderson-Broaddus (W. Va.) College.

Shaw (4-9) kept the first game close by attacking at a .370 hitting percentage, but the Bears hit only .174 in the final two games. Jessica Perry led Shaw with 12 kills and three aces.

Mount Olive stays on the road this weekend for a pair of NCAA Division II Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference matches. The Trojans travel to Misenheimer Friday to take on Pfeiffer, then head to Anderson (S.C.) College on Saturday.

Trojan men's soccer still fifth in region

MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive College stayed at No. 5 in this week's NSCAA/Adidas men's soccer NCAA II Southeast Regional rankings released Tuesday.

The Trojans have held the No. 5 position in each of the last three weeks and have spent five consecutive weeks in the top 10.

Mount Olive (9-2) is one of four Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference teams in this week's rankings along with No. 6 Queens, No. 8 Belmont Abbey and No. 10 Lees-McRae. UNC Pembroke remains at No. 1 in the region for the fifth consecutive week.

The poll is compiled by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Mount Olive split a pair of matches last week against regionally-ranked opponents falling 2-0 to No. 1 UNC Pembroke, then defeating No. 8 Belmont Abbey 2-0 on the road.

The Trojans entertain Coker (S.C.) College at 4 p.m. today and play host to Limestone (S.C.) College on Saturday afternoon.
