Prep football -- Rams fall to Havelock

HAVELOCK -- In a game that had all the makings of a blowout in the early going, the Greene Central Rams roared back to put a scare into the Havelock Rams.

But Havelock defensive back Kelvin Godette picked off a Travis Rouse pass to score with 2:17 left in the game to seal a wild 38-23 win over the Rams Friday.

With both teams working from the shotgun formation on nearly every offensive play, Havelock (4-2) jumped out to a 24-0 lead before Greene Central (3-3) sprang to life in the third quarter to get back into the game.

With Greene Central trailing 24-0, Rouse scampered in for a 6-yard touchdown to start the comeback late in the third quarter. Greene Central added a two-point conversion to trail 24-8.

The Rams recovered an onside kick and promptly drove 44 yards for another touchdown to pull to within 24-16 less than a minute later.

After the teams traded touchdowns, Greene Central faced third-and-14 on its on 25-yard line. Rouse was nearly sacked before he threw up a desperation floater to the left side that Godette caught in stride and took in for a touchdown.

Rouse, a senior, was 10-of-26 passing for 153 yards with two rushing touchdowns and the late interception.
