Warriors top Patriots in five

MOREHEAD CITY -- Kristen Elliott served 15 aces and collected five kills as Eastern Wayne rallied to upset West Carteret 18-25, 16-25, 25-18, 26-24, 15-6 in Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference play Thursday.

The Warriors climbed to 5-6 in the ECC and dealt the Patriots their fourth loss in conference play. The victory created a two-way tie at third place between West Carteret and South Central, which upset previously-unbeaten West Craven in four sets.

"They just really picked us apart. Everywhere there was a hole they found it," Eastern Wayne coach Bruce Burridge said of the first two sets. "We were really inconsistent serving the first two games."

Lauren Williford ignited Eastern Wayne's comeback in the third set. She served three aces in an eight-point run as the Warriors closed the overall match score to 2-1.

"The third game, we knew our backs were to the wall," Burridge said. "We covered the holes and started scrambling. The fourth game, we were better on the block and better on the serve."

Elliott served three consecutive aces in the fourth set.

Kindzy McDonald sparked the Warriors with three consecutive kills in the final set. Elliott also provided three kills.

"We picked it up another notch," Burridge said. "They kind of sat back and we took it to them. It was an absolute total team effort."

Eastern Wayne continues play next Tuesday at ECC co-leader West Craven.

North Johnston

upends F. Central

KENLY -- The streak is over.

North Johnston snapped Farmville Central's 19-match unbeaten run in Carolina 1-A Conference play with a 27-25, 15-25, 25-14, 25-23 victory Thursday afternoon.

The Panthers (13-4) seized sole possession of second place in the league at 6-2 -- one game ahead of Rosewood.

North Duplin

cages Bulldogs

CALYPSO -- Junior Sierra Ward turned in a 15-kill, seven-block performance as North Duplin dealt Princeton a 25-23, 25-23, 17-25, 29-27 setback in Carolina 1-A Conference action Thursday afternoon.

The loss dropped the Bulldogs (10-8) into fourth place in the league at 5-4 -- two games behind North Johnston and one behind Rosewood.

Ward also served three aces and had three digs on defense for the Rebels. Frontline mate Bethany Malcolm provided five kills, five blocks, five aces and nine digs.

"Both teams really played hard and fought for every point," North Duplin coach Heather Best said. "We really wanted this win and played extremely hard. It was a real team effort, everyone helped each other out to pull forward and win.

"This was an outstanding game."

Emily Deibert contributed four aces and a team-high 10 digs. Brittany Carr served four aces, while Jamie Vinson and Casey Pate combined for five kills and three blocks.

"The girls did not play up to their potential," Princeton coach Trudy Rast said. "We had a lot of bad serves, passes and spikes which made a huge difference in the games. We finally came around in the third game and played hard.

"We had a good lead in the fourth game, but our play was inconsistent and made a difference in the outcome."

Stephanie Daughtery recorded a team-leading seven kills for the Bulldogs. Nicole Hargis added four kills and four blocks. Shanika Atkinson recorded five kills.

Brittany Davis handed out 15 assists and served three aces.

Princeton entertains North Johnston next Tuesday, while North Duplin (5-8, 3-6 CC) is the guest of Ayden-Grifton.

Eagles take

league contest

Jessica Hill recorded 16 kills and five blocks as Rosewood needed four sets to defeat Spring Creek 25-14, 25-22, 20-25, 25-11 in Carolina 1-A Conference action Thursday.

The victory proved critical for the Eagles, who remained one game behind North Johnston in the league standings. Two berths are available for the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs which begin Oct. 26.

Stephanie Rhodes complemented Hill's effort with six kills and two blocks. Morgan Wheeler and Katy Morris combined for 11 kills.

Clare Narron dished out 13 assists.

Rosewood (11-4, 6-3 CC) travels to Wayne Country Day next Monday.

Margo Sauter and Lorenda Brogden (two aces) each turned in a good serving performance for the Gators. Brogden, Courtney Oxendine and Tomeka Pride each had two kills.

"We played really well last night," first-year Gators coach Deanna Morris said.

Spring Creek (3-9, 1-7 CC) entertains Farmville Central next Tuesday.

Chargers prevail

in CPIC matchup

A trio of Chargers recorded four kills apiece as Wayne Country Day swept Oxford Orphanage 25-13, 25-6, 25-5 in a Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference contest Thursday.

Amanda Knutson, Heather Daughtery and Amanda Benton each had four kills. The trio also combined for 10 service aces in the straight-set win.

Laura Ziemer added three aces and three kills.

Daughtery, Whitney Nagel and Caroline Lewis each served two aces.

The Chargers (7-7, 4-2 CPIC) entertain Rosewood next Monday afternoon.

South Lenoir

sweeps N. Lenoir

LAGRANGE -- South Lenoir swept North Lenoir 25-13, 25-21 in a battle of Eastern Plains 2-A Conference rivals Thursday afternoon at Wooten Gymnasium.

Kasey Harrison and Kaitlyn Howard each had three kills for the Hawks.

North Lenoir scored eight points with Brynne Fulghum on serve.

The Hawks (3-3 EPC) entertain Greene Central next Tuesday afternoon.

MOREHEAD CITY -- Eastern Wayne picked up its seventh Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference victory with a 25-23, 25-13 conquest of West Carteret.

The Warriors travel to West Craven next Tuesday.

KENLY -- North Johnston hammered Farmville Central 25-10, 25-11 in Carolina 1-A Conference play Thursday.

The Panthers (8-6, 5-3 CC) travel to Princeton next Tuesday.

Rosewood

handles Gators

Courtney Hill collected three kills and two blocks as Rosewood swept county rival Spring Creek 25-14, 25-18 in Carolina 1-A Conference play Thursday afternoon.

Chandra Meadows provided two kills, while Ashley Williams contributed one kill and one block. Jamie Bold added one block.

Aubrey Reinhard and Roxie Phillips registered three assists apiece.

Rosewood (15-0, 9-0 CC) is the guest of Wayne Country Day next Monday afternoon.

Princeton picks

up league win

CALYPSO -- Cynthia Peedin tied for team-high honors in aces (four) and registered three kills in Princeton's 26-24, 25-13 victory against Carolina 1-A Conference rival North Duplin.

Tiesha Williams also served four aces for the Bulldogs.

Brittany Atkinson and Leikendra Atkinson notched two kills apiece.

Princeton (6-9, 5-4 CC) entertains county foe North Johnston next Tuesday afternoon.
