Chargers shock Greenfield School

Please forgive Wayne Country Day boys' soccer coach Michael Taylor for walking around campus in a daze today.

Taylor is in shock after the Chargers stunned No. 1-ranked Greenfield 2-1 in a Classes 1-A/2-A Coastal Plains Independent Conference match Thursday afternoon. The Chargers (11-2-1) claimed sole possession of first place at 4-0 and dealt the Knights their first league loss in at least two seasons.

Greenfield (11-6, 3-1) took a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute after William Stakes converted a penalty kick.

"It looked like both guys were going after the ball and the Greenfield guy tripped," Taylor said. "I really didn't complain about it because he did foul him in the box. I wasn't really worried about it."

There was no need.

The Chargers posted back-to-back goals within a one-minute span.

Kevin Logan converted a direct kick -- an 18-yard blast that hit the upper right-hand corner of the goal in the 34th minute.

"It was a great shot," Taylor said.

Less than a minute later, Logan threw the ball in near the Knights' goal and Chris Reed tapped it in for a 2-1 lead at halftime.

"There really weren't that many shots on goal for either team," Taylor said. "It was a real big defensive game. We were into the game the entire time. Once that one goal occurred, we didn't get down on ourselves and we kept on playing.

"This team has a lot of heart ... more than I've seen in the past."

Wayne Country Day, ranked No. 4 in the latest NCISAA poll, entertains Rocky Mount Academy next Tuesday.

Wayne Christian 9, YMCA 0 -- Gregory Alexander notched the hat trick (three goals) for the Eagles, who remained unbeaten in three outings. Spencer Wise, John Thomas Norris, Taylor Gardner, Josh Best, Taylor Gray and Bradley Yelverton each provided one goal. Joe Carter dished out five assists. Wayne Christian faces St. Mary's next Tuesday.
