Warriors shut out North Lenoir

Andrew Corley collected two goals and added an assist as Eastern Wayne shut out North Lenoir 3-0 in non-conference play Tuesday.

Joe Gossett started the Warriors' first scoring strike with a pass through the right side of the defense to Corley. Corley finished the shot, which dipped into the lower left corner past Hawks goalie Levin Jones.

David Hook helped account for Corley's second mark, which occurred in the 36th minute. Corley completed the play with a shot into the upper left corner of the net from 12 yards.

Corley assisted Gossett in the 48th minute to conclude the scoring.

"We were able to dominate midfield play early and maybe just a little unlucky finishing our shots tonight," veteran Eastern Wayne coach Jorg Wagner said. "With their large-scale substitutions, North Lenoir stayed fresh and did a good job pressuring the ball throughout the game.

"They were able to force the occasional turnover. Fortunately, Josh Turner and our backline were alert and could help keep another 'clean sheet' for our keepers."

The Warriors owned a decisive 25-2 edge in shots on goal and doubled the Hawks 4-2 in corner kicks.

"It was reassuring to see such stout defensive work just before our matchup with C.B. Aycock," Wagner said. "We will most certainly need a similar effort to contain their attack efficiently."

Eastern Wayne (7-3) entertains C.B. Aycock next Monday.

Meanwhile, North Lenoir (6-3-1) travels to Washington on Thursday.

Howell, Bunn

lead Eagles

Trailing 2-1 going into the final 10 minutes, Rosewood's Matt Howell and Kyle Bunn posted two goals each to boost the Eagles past Hobbton 3-2 in a Class 1-A Carolina/Super Six match Monday at Branch Pope Field.

Howell opened the scoring for the Eagles (6-6-1, 3-1 C/SS) seven minutes into the match on an assist from Joey Churchwell, before two unanswered Hobbton goals by Xavier Nunez and Danny Reyes gave the Wildcats a 2-1 advantage going into halftime.

"We played a very poor first half especially," Rosewood coach Daniel Mitchell said. "We are going to need a much better performance against James Kenan on Wednesday."

The Tigers visit the Eagles today. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

settle for draw

Cameron Strickland scored Wayne Country Day's lone goal in a 1-1 tie against Kerr-Vance in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference play Tuesday.

Jimmy Larson assisted Strickland on the first-half goal.

Kerr-Vance tied the match in the second half.

The Chargers (3-3-1, 0-2-1 CPIC) entertain Greenfield on Thursday.
