MOC women's soccer team shines in shutout of Ferrum

MOUNT OLIVE -- Melanie Cobb and Emily Escolas scored two goals apiece to lead Mount Olive to a 5-0 victory over Ferrum in non-conference women's soccer Sunday at Trojan Field. The win extends the Trojans' winning streak to a school record seventh in a row.

Mount Olive (8-1-0) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after Cobb scored a pair of goals in the first 20 minutes. The Richlands sophomore scored at least one goal in seven consecutive matches, including her third hat trick of the season Saturday against Erskine. She now has 15 goals on the season, a new school record.

Escolas helped put the game out of reach with a pair of goals in a span of two minutes late in the first half. Mount Olive outshot Ferrum 25-0.

Mount Olive returns to action Tuesday as the Trojans travel to Fayetteville to take on Methodist in a non-conference contest. Match time is 4 p.m. Ferrum travels to Staunton, Va., Wednesday at 4 p.m. to take on Mary Baldwin.

Camp Player of week

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The Walter Camp Football Foundation has selected North Carolina State defensive lineman Manny Lawson as the Division 1-A National Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Wolfpack's 17-16 win over Virginia Tech Saturday.

The junior, who played at Eastern Wayne High School in his prep days, recorded four tackles, three of which were quarterback sacks totaling losses of 27 yards. Lawson added a pass breakup as the N.C. State defense held Virginia Tech to just 192 yards of total offense.

With the victory, North Carolina State improved to 2-1 on the season.

The Walter Camp Football Foundation, a New Haven-based all-volunteer group, was founded in 1967 to perpetuate the ideals of Camp and to continue the tradition of selecting annually an All-America team.
