College soccer -- Cobb, Williams lead respective Trojan teams

MOUNT OLIVE -- Cory Worrell and Melanie Cobb continued to blister opposing defenses for multiple-goal performances as Mount Olive College swept Erskine (S.C.) College in an NCAA Division II Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference doubleheader Saturday at Trojan Field.

Worrell picked up two goals as the Trojan men grounded the Flying Fleet 7-3 and remained unbeaten in four CVAC outings. Worrell, a senior, boosted his season total to 13.

Cobb registered the hat trick (three goals) as the Trojan women prevailed 3-2 and claimed their fourth CVAC victory in five tries. Cobb continued rewriting the school's record book for goals scored with 13 on the season.

"She's playing well," Mount Olive women's coach Chris Shaw said.

Freshman midfielder April Jacobs assisted on Cobb's first two goals, while freshman forward Caitlyn Wright assisted on the last one.

"I thought the first half, I was happy (with play) from midfield up and defensively we didn't look sharp," Shaw said. "We were giving Erskine too many opportunities and I thought we were going to fix it in the second half.

"Defensively, we were average but offensively we did play well."

The Flying Fleet (1-5, 0-3) tallied two goals in the final 20 minutes.

Mount Olive dominated shots on goal and attempted 12 corner kicks. Shaw said the team "peppered" the Erskine goal throughout each half, but could only collect three goals for its effort.

The Trojan women entertain Ferrum (Va.) College at 2 p.m. today.

The men's teams worked to a scoreless tie for 22-plus minutes until Worrell broke the ice in the 23rd minute on Reid Clewis' assist. The duo hooked up again in the 27th minute as the Trojan offense got untracked and began to put more pressure on Erskine.

Freshman midfielder Frank Stilley concluded the first-half scoring an assist from Warren Atkins.

Clewis pushed the Trojans' lead to 4-1 in the 68th minute on assist by sophomore defender Charles Williams. Freshman Chris Varela tallied a mark two minutes later.

Erskine (0-4-1, 0-2-1) pulled within 6-3 before freshman midfielder Adam Caston closed out the scoring on Stilley's assist.

The Trojans owned a decisive 25-5 advantage in shots on goal and attempted 11 corner kicks compared to two for the Flying Fleet. Goalies Chris Roush, Matt Sexton and Chase Smith combined for two saves.

Mount Olive entertains UNC Pembroke at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
