Princeton triumphs over Chargers

LITTLEFIELD -- Princeton snapped its three-game losing streak in Class 1-A Carolina Conference play with a 25-14, 25-18, 25-12 victory against Ayden-Grifton on Thursday afternoon.

Stephanie Daughtry paced the Bulldogs' attack with seven kills, while Nicole Hargis contributed six kills, one block and one service ace.

Sarah Gibbs complemented Daughtry and Hargis' front-line play with four kills and one block. Brittany Rose added three kills.

Melissa Worley dished out 16 assists, while Kristen Parker served six aces. Kortnie Yutzy added two aces and one dig.

"The girls did a great job covering all areas of the court," Princeton coach Trudy Rast said. "We played with lots of enthusiasm and that showed in the scores."

Erin Savage and Allison Frazier combined for seven kills for the Chargers, who fell to 2-5 against Carolina Conference opposition.

Daughtry and Hargis each had five kills as the Bulldogs swept county rival Smithfield-Selma 25-18, 25-16, 25-15 on the road Wednesday afternoon.

"The girls did a great job," Rast said. "By the third game they were really playing like the team I know they are. I was also very pleased by the excellent way the girls coming off the bench played.

"They did really good."

Daughtry and Hargis each served three aces. Hargis also contributed two blocks and one dig.

Sarah Gibbs and Kaitlin Haddock each registered a kill.

Princeton (9-7, 4-3 CC) entertains Spring Creek next Tuesday.

So. Wayne picks

up league victory

KINSTON -- Southern Wayne faltered in the opening set, but rebounded to deal Kinston a 19-25, 25-21, 25-13, 25-15 loss in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play Thursday.

"They played well and the communication was there in games two through four," Saints coach Brian Bandy said. "Our serving was very good. I think we had five service errors for the whole match.

"Our big issue right now is trying to play as a team and nothing else but pride because it looks like we're out of the playoff race."

The Saints rose to 2-7 in the ECC and entertain unbeaten D.H. Conley this afternoon.

Hawks continue

EPC 2-A dominance

LAGRANGE -- Senior middle hitter Randi Moulton provided a match-high 14 kills as North Lenoir throttled SouthWest Edgecombe 25-13, 25-12, 25-15 in Eastern Plains 2-A Conference action Thursday.

The Hawks (14-1) captured their 34th consecutive regular-season EPC victory and conclude first-half play next Tuesday at Tarboro.

Leslie Oliver contributed seven kills and Brittany Sanders added five.

Rachel Cromer served a pair of aces and had two blocks.

The Cougars (5-5, 1-3) suffered their third straight EPC loss.

C.B. Aycock

defeats Cougars

Outside hitter Lindsay Newman collected eight kills as Charles B. Aycock toppled Goldsboro 25-9, 25-10, 25-12 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play.

Senior Jenny Jackson served 10 aces.

"It was an overall good match and we got strong play from Morgan Davis," Aycock coach Davis Harris said.

The Golden Falcons (11-2, 8-1 ECC) entertain Southern Wayne next Wednesday.

North Johnston

falls to 3-A Bruins

KENLY -- Traditional Class 3-A power Wilson Beddingfield stumbled in its opening set against North Johnston, but rebounded for a 29-31, 25-15, 27-25, 25-22 non-conference victory Thursday afternoon.

"We tried to hang in there, except the second set," veteran Panthers coach Nicole Davis said. "It could have gone either way three out of four sets. We lacked the intensity that we needed to make the game-stopping plays."

The Panthers fell to 10-4 and entertain Franklinton next Monday.

Rosewood drops

Carolina 1-A match

FARMVILLE -- Rosewood came close to handing Farmville Central its first loss in 19 Carolina 1-A Conference matches dating back to last season, but the Jaguars escaped.

Megan Zullo delivered seven kills and three blocks in a 25-21, 22-25, 25-20, 24-26, 15-10 victory. Farmville Central (13-1) remained unbeaten in seven league outings and maintained its two-game advantage against North Johnston, while the Eagles fell three games behind.

Sophomore Brittany Talbot and Ericka Taylor each contributed four kills. Taylor and Zullo combined for six blocks.

"We played well, but we just couldn't finish it," Rosewood coach Jennifer Cochran said.

Jessica Hill led the Eagles with seven kills and five blocks, while frontline mate Morgan Wheeler chipped in three kills and three blocks.

Kelli Gurley added three kills.

Hannah Aycock, Clare Narron and Abigail Barrow combined for 11 digs on defense.

Rosewood (9-4, 4-3 CC) entertains Ayden-Grifton next Tuesday.

Warriors scalped

in ECC 3-A battle

WINTERVILLE -- Nicole Nunamaker recorded six kills and five service aces as South Central swept Eastern Wayne 25-12, 25-22, 25-19 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play Thursday.

Alaina Risi and Jennifer Joyner added five and four kills, respectively.

Amelia Byrd served three aces.

The Falcons (9-7) improved to 6-3 in the ECC.

Eastern Wayne statistics were not available at press time. The Warriors (3-7 ECC) entertain Washington next Tuesday.

Eagles endure

CCC 1-A setback

FAYETTEVILLE -- Alicia Chong picked up four kills and Melissa Sheldon added two as Wayne Christian suffered a 25-15, 24-26, 16-25, 14-25 loss Thursday afternoon at Village Christian.

The Eagles (7-3) fell to 3-3 in Carolina Christian 1-A Conference action.

Amanda Bradley, Ashley Clark and Michelle Krug each served two aces.

Wayne Christian travels to Cary Christian on Monday.

Chargers fall

at home to FMA

Wayne Country Day bolted to a 2-0 lead in its best-of-five match against Flora MacDonald Academy on Thursday afternoon, but couldn't keep the momentum in a 25-13, 25-17, 15-25, 17-25, 9-15 loss.

Amanda Benton led the Chargers with a match-high 10 kills to go along with two aces, one block and two digs. Amanda Knutson contributed seven kills, three digs and four aces.

Heather Daughtery recorded five aces, six kills and four digs. Stephanie Knutson paced the defense with eight digs and had two kills, while Laura Ziemer chipped in six aces and two kills.

Caroline Lewis provided two aces and two kills.

Wayne Country Day (5-6) travels to Terra Ceia next Monday.

Super Six loss

WARSAW -- Midway rallied to take the final two sets in a 15-25, 25-21, 20-25, 25-10, 15-12 victory against Super Six 1-A Conference rival James Kenan on Thursday at Harmon Gym.

Taylor Lanier, Caroline Moore and Hannah Adams each had two kills for the Tigers. Evans and Moore each served an ace.

James Kenan (6-7, 2-3) begins second-half Super Six play next Tuesday at county rival Wallace-Rose Hill.

LAGRANGE -- Kaitlyn Howard pounded the SouthWest Edgecombe defense for seven kills as North Lenoir prevailed 25-11, 25-22 in an Eastern Plains 2-A Conference match at Wooten Gymnasium.

Brittany McPhail added three kills.

The Hawks scored 12 points with Brynne Fulghum on serve and 11 with Mattie Williamson on serve.

North Lenoir (9-6, 3-1) travels to Tarboro next Tuesday.

Panthers hand

Bruins a loss

KENLY -- North Johnston swept Wilson Beddingfield 26-24, 25-23 in a non-conference game Thursday.

The Panthers improved to 5-6 overall.

Falcons soar

past E. Wayne

WINTERVILLE -- Carly Hobbs and Andrea Britt each served three aces as South Central defeated Eastern Wayne 25-9, 25-23 in an Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference match Thursday.

Emily Perkins and Reese Mills combined for six kills.

The Warriors fell to 6-3 in the ECC.

South Central (11-4) picked up its seventh win against one loss in the conference.

LITTLEFIELD -- Princeton survived a late rally in the second set and denied Ayden-Grifton' 25-18, 28-26 in a Carolina 1-A Conference battle Thursday.

Cynthia Peedin and Heather Smith each had two kills for the Bulldogs.

Tiesha Williams served three aces. Brittany Atkinson, Leikendra Atkinson and Peedin each had one ace.

"The team had great sets and spikes," said Princeton coach Holly Sullivan. "The girls talked to each other and they worked well as a team. The team has improved since the beginning of the season."

The Chargers, who travel to Rosewood next Tuesday, fell to 5-2 in conference play.

Princeton (4-8, 3-4 CC) entertains Spring Creek next Tuesday.

Carolina champs

FARMVILLE -- Rosewood remained unbeaten in seven Carolina 1-A Conference matches with a 25-11, 25-10 conquest of Farmville Central on Thursday.

The Eagles scored nine points with Kasie Braswell and Roxie Phillips on serve. They picked up eight points with Ashley Williams on serve, and also received good serving efforts from Chandra Meadows, Aubrey Reinhard and Courtney Hill.

Rosewood (13-0) plays host to Ayden-Grifton next Tuesday.

The Jaguars are winless in seven Carolina matches.

Heather Price served an ace and added one kill as Wayne Country Day dropped a 25-6, 25-12 non-conference decision against Flora MacDonald Academy on Thursday.

Kayla Flanagan contributed one ace.

The Chargers (4-5) visit Terra Ceia next Monday.

dumps Raiders

WARSAW -- Lauren Houston turned in a three-kill performance as James Kenan swept Midway 25-13, 25-16 in Super Six 1-A Conference action Thursday afternoon at Harmon Gym.

Ashanti Stroud contributed two kills, while Hannah Adams added one kill. Adams served four aces. Kandice Helton contributed an ace.

The Tigers (8-3, 4-1 SS) travel to Wallace-Rose Hill next Tuesday.
