Santopolo, Creech

take Carolina 1-A wins

FARMVILLE -- Farmville Central's Joey Santopolo and North Johnston's Heather Creech emerged the top runners in a Class 1-A Carolina Conference meet contested Wednesday.

Santopolo ran the 3.1-mile course in 17 minutes, 43 seconds as the Jaguars collected 30 points compared to 63 for runner-up Spring Creek. North Johnston was third with 71, followed by North Duplin (91) and Princeton (101).

The Gators' Eric Walters finished third in 18:33.

Clint Bland led North Duplin with a fifth-place effort of 19:21, while North Johnston's Matthew Peeden recorded the same time.

Phillip Croon of Princeton ended up eighth in 19:52. Casey Elrod claimed Rosewood's top time of 19:59, which was good enough for ninth-place in the five-team meet.

Creech, coupled with Elizabeth Baker's third-place time, helped North Johnston nip archrival Princeton 25-38. Spring Creek claimed third with 80, while Rosewood, North Duplin and Farmville Central didn't field enough runners to post a team score.

Courtney Yancey led the Bulldogs with a fourth-place time of 22:31.

Rosewood's Stephanie Behrend, one of the conference's most-consistent runners, ended up fifth in 23:31.

Barbara Witherington led Spring Creek with a 13th-place time of 26:27.

The teams are scheduled to run again next Wednesday at North Johnston. The meet begins at 4:30 p.m.
