Men's soccer team ties for fifth in poll

MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive College moved up one spot into a tie for No. 5 in this week's NSCAA/Adidas men's soccer NCAA II Southeast Regional rankings announced Tuesday.

The ranking is the highest ever for Mount Olive, which is off to its best start since becoming an NCAA Division II member in 1995.

Mount Olive (6-1-0, 3-0-0 CVAC) is one of three NCAA Division II Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference teams in this week's rankings. The Trojans are tied with Queens and two spots ahead of No. 7 Belmont Abbey.

UNC Pembroke remains at No. 1 in the region for the third consecutive week. The poll is compiled by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

The Trojans extended their winning streak to three Saturday with a 3-1 conference victory at St. Andrews.

Mount Olive returns to action Wednesday as the Trojans play host to Francis Marion in a non-conference contest. Match time is 4 p.m. at Trojan Field.

Clewis earns CVAC honor

MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive College forward Reid Clewis has been named NCAA Division II Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference men's soccer player of the week announced Tuesday.

Clewis is the second Trojan men's soccer player in as many weeks to earn player of the week honors.

Clewis, a junior from Wilmington, scored a goal and two assists in Mount Olive's 7-0 win over Barton last Wednesday, then followed that with a goal and an assist in the Trojans' 3-1 victory Saturday at St. Andrews.

Clewis has eight goals and three assists for 19 points and has scored at least one goal in six of the Trojans' first seven contests this season. He ranks second in the CVAC in total goals and points behind teammate and last week's player of the week Cory Worrell.

Clewis also ranks among the top 30 in the nation in goals and points per game. In his first two years at Mount Olive, Clewis was a starting midfielder and had not scored any goals prior to this season.
