AYDEN -- North Lenoir's defense came within one minute of a shutout as the Hawks collected their first win of the year Friday night in a 14-8 win over Ayden-Grifton at the Chargers' field.
The Hawks won a fairly even statistical battle, rushing for over 200 yards and taking advantage of good field position from two poor Charger punts.
E.J. Brown scored the first touchdown on a 25-yard run shortly after the second quarter began. The Hawks made it 14-0 after James Davis hauled in a six-yard touchdown pass from Andrew Manning - the only completed pass of the night for North Lenoir.
Ayden-Grifton got on the scoreboard in the final minute of the game as Daniel Greene scored on a 38-yard run.
Brown led the rushers with 82 yards on seven carries, while Ervin Atkins had 66 yards on eight totes and Antonio Hamilton had 64 yards on 11 carries.
North Lenoir travels to Warsaw on Friday to meet James Kenan.
