James shines, Goldsboro upsets Saints

DUDLEY -- Ashelyn James collected six kills and two blocks as Goldsboro stunned Southern Wayne 25-23, 27-25, 12-25, 25-21 in a Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference match Thursday afternoon.

The Cougars (2-6, 2-5 ECC) earned their first-ever league victory against a county opponent and snapped a three-game road losing streak.

Carmille Early added four kills and three blocks.

"Shemeka Hardy and Tiffany Burden played very well," Goldsboro head coach Ronnie McClary said.

The Saints fell to 2-12 and 1-6 in the ECC.

Eagles, Rebels

battle four sets

Rosewood claimed the final two sets in a 27-25, 23-25, 25-21, 25-21 victory against Carolina 1-A Conference rival North Duplin on Thursday afternoon.

Senior middle hitter Jessica Hill paced the Eagles with six kills and four blocks. She added two aces and two assists for Rosewood, which climbed to 3-2 in conference play.

Kasey Gray added four blocks and one kill. Katy Morris contributed three kills, three digs and an ace. Stephanie Rhodes chipped in with five kills, two digs and three blocks.

Clare Narron dished out a season-high 12 assists, while Hannah Aycock handed out nine.

Rosewood rose to 8-3 overall.

"Losing a match 3-1 doesn't look good on paper, but anyone who was at the match saw how hard we played, and how we are capable of playing," Rebels coach Heather Best said. "Sierra (Ward) played an incredible game and the whole team rallied together.

"Mentally, we showed a lot of discipline, and maturity. Rosewood is a good team with a lot of talent, and for us to play as well as we did and stay together through some tough parts of the match, speaks wonders for our program."

Ward collected a season-high 17 kills to go along with two blocks, three digs and three aces. Senior middle hitter Bethany Malcolm added three kills, five aces, one block and five digs.

Emily Deibert chipped in one kill, one ace and seven digs. Jamie Vinson contributed two kills.

North Duplin entertains Lakewood next Monday.

Bulldogs lose

five-set thriller

PRINCETON -- Princeton rebounded from a two-set deficit and nearly knocked off defending Carolina 1-A champion Farmville Central on Thursday. The Jaguars survived 25-7, 25-15, 20-25, 22-25, 16-14.

"The girls had a tough time during the first two games," first-year Bulldogs coach Trudy Rast said. "The third game we really put everything together and came out strong. We played really great ball during the last three games of the match."

Rast cited the strong net play of Nicole Hargis, Sarah Gibbs (five blocks) and Kaitlyn Haddock. The trio combined for 26 kills in the five-set thriller.

Melissa Worley dished out 24 assists to go along with two aces and three digs. Kourtnie Yutzy and Brittany Rose combined for 12 digs on defense, while Kristen Parker added four digs.

Parker also served a team-leading six aces.

Princeton (7-6, 3-2 CC) visits archrival Rosewood next Tuesday.

Golden Falcons

pick up ECC sweep

PIKEVILLE -- Senior outside hitter Jenny Jackson put down 11 kills as Charles B. Aycock swept county rival Eastern Wayne 25-22, 25-16, 25-15 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play.

Chrissy Setliff added seven service aces.

"We served very well and kept them off balance. They couldn't get their sets (in synch)," Aycock coach Davis Harris said. "We had solid play from Caroline Potter."

Aycock (9-2, 6-1 ECC) travels to Washington next Tuesday. Meanwhile, the Warriors (2-11, 2-5) visit Kinston the same afternoon.

Panthers pull

out Carolina win

LITTLEFIELD -- North Johnston dropped the opening set, but bounced back to defeat Ayden-Grifton 18-25, 25-12, 25-17, 25-14 in Carolina 1-A Conference action.

The Panthers (8-3, 3-2 CC) travel to Spring Creek next Tuesday.

Conquerors fall

to Hilltop Christian

FUQUAY-VARINA -- Faith Christian opened its Mid-Atlantic Christian Athletic Association 2-A schedule with an 8-25, 3-25, 11-25 loss to Hilltop Christian of Fuquay-Varina on Thursday.

"The girls are continuing to get stronger as the games go on," Conquerors coach Jamie Conlon said. "We're proud of the progression they are making."

Christie Charles led Faith Christian with two kills, two digs and two aces. Kaitlyn Floars and Christina Jones combined for three kills.

Holly Dawson dished out nine assists. Heather Crumpler and eighth-grader Rebecca Smith handed out four assists apiece.

Faith Christian (0-1 MACAA) plays a doubleheader at home today against Liberty Christian and Victory Christian. The first match is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Tigers can't

handle Leopards

ROSEBORO -- Lakewood handed James Kenan its first loss in Super Six 1-A Conference play 25-23, 25-10, 25-20 on Thursday afternoon.

Alisha Taber and Jordan Griffin played a solid game for the Tigers, who fell to 2-1 in the league.

James Kenan (5-5) is the guest of Goldsboro next Monday, and entertains conference foe Union on Tuesday.

Hawks bounce

back from defeat

SNOW HILL -- Kasey Harrison delivered three kills as North Lenoir swept Greene Central 25-9, 25-13 in Eastern Plains 2-A Conference play.

The Hawks (7-6, 1-1 EPC) rebounded from Tuesday's disappointing loss against archrival South Lenoir.

North Lenoir picked up 26 points with Mattie Williamson on serve and seven with Brynne Fulghum on serve.

Greene Central (2-8, 1-1) scored nine of its 22 points with Megan Shackleford on serve.

Tigers unbeaten

in Super Six 1-A

ROSEBORO -- Lauren Houston turned in two kills as James Kenan outlasted Lakewood 25-10, 15-25, 25-15 in Super Six 1-A Conference play Thursday.

Matesha Jones added one kill for the Tigers, who remained unbeaten in three Super Six outings.

James Kenan (6-3) continues conference play at home next Tuesday against Union.

Wayne Christian

stumbles on road

WILMINGTON -- Wayne Christian suffered its fifth defeat of the season after a 25-10, 25-20 loss against Cape Fear Academy on Thursday afternoon.

"The team is coming together, moving better and starting to play well," Wayne Christian coach Shelly Bradley said.

The Eagles (2-5) entertain Bethel Christian today.

LITTLEFIELD -- North Johnston fell to 3-2 in Carolina 1-A Conference play with a 29-27, 10-25, 15-25 loss against Ayden-Grifton on Thursday.

Aycock (8-2, 5-1) is the guest of Washington next Tuesday.

PRINCETON -- Cynthia Peedin and Heather Smith each recorded two kills as Princeton swept Farmville Central 25-8, 25-11 in a Carolina 1-A Conference match Thursday.

Carrie Croom served four aces. Smith, Tiesha Williams and Leikendra Atkinson each had three aces. Brittany Atkinson contributed two aces.

Williams added three digs on defense.

"The team had great passes, great serves and excellent spikes," said Princeton coach Holly Sullivan. "The players were moving quickly on the court to cover all areas. (We) guarded the net strong and watched the ball to move."

The Bulldogs (3-7, 2-3 CC) travel to archrival Rosewood next Tuesday.

Carolina champs

still rolling along

Aubrey Reinhard registered three service aces and three assists as Rosewood -- the reigning Carolina 1-A Conference champion -- remained unbeaten with a 25-12, 25-10 win against North Duplin.

Courtney Hill recorded three blocks, one kill and three digs in the straight-set win. Ashley Williams provided two blocks and one dig, while Kasie Braswell added a dig.

Jamie Bold had one assist.

Rosewood (11-0, 5-0 CC) entertains archrival Princeton next Tuesday.
