Devon Bennett and Anthony Gibson each rushed for a pair touchdowns as the Eagles prevailed at Branch Pope Field.

Bennett scored on runs of 30 and 11 yards. Gibson broke through for touchdown runs of 46 and 32. His second scoring run gave Rosewood (3-1) a two-touchdown cushion in the final quarter.

"The offensive line did a great job blocking up front for us," Rosewood coach Daniel Baynes said.

Trevor Morris, Andrew Taylor, David Smeltzer, Brandon Hill, Jeremy Hill and tight end Garrett Howell helped open the holes for the backfield.

Baynes said Allen Hoke, Matt Koger, Andre Everett and Holt Rains emerged the defensive leaders.

Rosewood opens its Class 1-A Carolina Conference season next Thursday at Ayden-Grifton.

South Central 20

DUDLEY -- Justin Mitchell and Andre Williams combined to stop South Central's game-tying two-point conversion in the final two minutes and escaped with an Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference victory.

The Saints, who trailed 14-6 at halftime, turned in a great second-half effort.

Quarterback Michael Holland bulled his way over from the one-yard line and added the two-point conversion for a 14-14 tie in the third quarter.

Anthony Council broke loose for an 80-yard touchdown, giving the Saints a 20-14 lead in the fourth. Holland completed the eventual game-winning, two-point pass to Antwan Chestnut.

Michael Allen led the Saints defense with 10 solo tackles and seven assists.

"He was everywhere," said Southern Wayne head coach Trae McKee.

Justin Mitchell and Andre Williams combined for 11 tackles. Thomas Oliver recovered a fumble.

Southern Wayne (3-1, 2-0 ECC) travels to county rival Charles B. Aycock next Thursday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Hardy Talton Stadium.

Washington 28

Eastern Wayne 20

Anthony O'tellio threw for 120 yards and two touchdowns, both to Orlando Midgett, in an Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference matchup at Little Big Horn.

Midgett snagged five receptions for 105 yards as the Warriors (1-3) remained winless in two ECC contests.

Andrew Blevins rambled for 85 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries.

Nolan Lancaster spearheaded the Warrior defense with 10 tackles. Anthony Williams and Alvin Daniels each tallied seven tackles. Mike Hardy contributed five tackles and one sack.

Eastern Wayne travels to West Carteret.

Middle schools

Spring Creek 32, Grantham 16 -- Tamarcus Ellis and Allen Price each ran for 110 yards for the Gators. Ellis scored touchdowns on runs of five, 12 and 20 yards, while Price added a 15-yard TD. Trey King led the Spring Creek defense with six tackles. Jabari Santos added five tackles and an interception. It was the Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference Division II opener for both teams. Spring Creek (2-2) entertains Goldsboro next Thursday afternoon.

Brogden 34, Eastern Wayne 26 -- Kenneth Casper III rushed for 200 yards and three touchdowns for the unbeaten Rams. Adrian Amerson added an eight-yard run, while Tyrelle Jackson contributed a one-yard TD run. Casper emerged the defensive leader with seven stops. Larenza Alford had six tackles and recovered a fumble. Josh Rodriguez had five tackles, while Antonio Gaines sacked the Warrior quarterback twice. Brogden (4-0) entertains Greenwood next Thursday, while Eastern Wayne (3-1) is the guest of Greenwood. It was the WCMSAC Division I opener for both teams.
