MOUNT OLIVE -- Heidi Philip scored the go-ahead goal less than a minute into the second half and broke the school single-season assist record as host Mount Olive defeated Barton 3-1 in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference women's soccer Wednesday at Trojan Field.
Melanie Cobb scored her conference-leading ninth goal and April Jacobs recorded two assists in her first collegiate match to lead the Trojans to their third consecutive win.
Mount Olive fell behind late in the first half as Barton took a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute on Jordan Carter's goal. Mount Olive evened the match 91 seconds later as Jacobs found Cobb open in the box and the two teams went into halftime tied 1-1.
A Barton foul deep in its zone shortly after the second-half kickoff led to what proved to be the winning goal as Jacobs served from a set piece to Philip, who flicked the ball in from eight yards out to give the Trojans a 2-1 lead only 54 seconds into the second half. Mount Olive added an insurance goal in the 63rd minute as Gina Dos Santos scored on a double assist from Philip and Kate Painter.
The assist by Philip was her eighth of the season to give her sole possession of the school single-season record. Earlier this season, she set a school single-game record with five assists.
Mount Olive goalkeeper Heather Ressler recorded six saves, while Ashley Ross had seven saves for Barton. Mount Olive outshot Barton 20-11.
The win was the first for Mount Olive over Barton since the Trojans added women's soccer in 1995. Mount Olive, which won only three games last year, is one win away from matching the school single-season win total.
Mount Olive returns to action Saturday as the Trojans travel to Laurinburg to face St. Andrews in a CVAC contest. Match time is 2 p.m.
