Men's Soccer: Regional No. 6 Mount Olive Defeats

MOUNT OLIVE -- Cory Worrell ignited a second-half scoring blitz with his conference-leading ninth goal of the season as regionally sixth-ranked Mount Olive College defeated Barton 7-0 in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference men's soccer Wednesday at Trojan Field. The Trojans scored six goals in the second half, including three in a span of four minutes, to break open a close game.
Mount Olive went into halftime with a 1-0 lead as Warren Atkins scored in the 28th minute to break a scoreless tie.
Worrell, who has scored at least one goal in each of the Trojans' five wins this season, opened the second-half scoring with a goal in the 57th minute. Charles Williams followed with his second goal in as many conference matches to extend Mount Olive's lead to 3-0.
The Trojans broke the game open beginning in the 76th minute as freshman Woody Stilley scored his first collegiate goal and Reid Clewis scored his seventh goal of the season in the 79th minute. Stilley notched his second collegiate goal one minute later to make the score 6-0. Matt Hobbs finished the scoring in the 88th minute.
Clewis, who ranks second in the CVAC behind Worrell in goals scored, added two assists.
Mount Olive goalkeeper Chris Roush recorded nine saves and combined with Jason Miller for the Trojans' second shutout of the season.
Mount Olive is off to its best start since opening the 2000 season with a 5-1-0 mark. The Trojans' No. 6 ranking in the Adidas/NSCAA Southeast Region Top 10 is their highest ever.
Mount Olive returns to action Saturday as the Trojans travel to Laurinburg to face St. Andrews in a CVAC contest. Match time is 4 p.m.
