Hargis leads Princeton past Spartans

CAMERON -- Nicole Hargis provided a match-high 10 kills as Princeton outlasted Union 25-19, 22-25, 27-25, 25-19 in a non-conference match Monday afternoon.

Hargis added four service aces and three blocks for the Bulldogs, who improved to 7-5 overall. Frontline mate Stephanie Daughtry contributed four kills, an ace and three digs.

Sarah Gibbs chipped in two kills and two blocks. Kristen Parker added two aces and two digs, while Kortnie Yutzy recorded four aces and eight digs.

Melissa Worley dished out 14 assists.

"The girls played strong against Union," first-year Princeton coach Trudy Rast said. "We had a lot of hustle and coverage on the court. We still need to work on making better passes to our target.

"We played hard in the third game and did not give up."

Princeton entertains Farmville Central, the reigning Class 1-A Carolina Conference champion, at 4:30 p.m. today.

Rams drop

five-set match

SNOW HILL -- Peoria Wade and Teketia May each collected five kills as Greene Central endured a tough five-set loss -- 25-19, 22-25, 25-21, 18-25, 5-15 -- against South Central on Monday afternoon.

The Rams collected 18 points with Briana Stanton on serve.

Greene Central (2-8) entertains North Lenoir, the three-time defending Eastern Plains 2-A Conference champion, at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Oakwood hands

Chargers a loss

Wayne Country Day endured its fifth loss in six outings with a 24-26, 19-25 setback against visiting Oakwood Academy on Monday afternoon.

Ellen Elmore and Stephanie Sykes each had five kills for the Chargers.

Kayla Flanagan, Heather Price and Danielle Holland each served an ace.

Wayne Country Day (1-5) entertains Greenfield today in a Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference game.

Middle schools

Grantham d. Spring Creek 25-16, 25-23, 25-23 -- Morgan Davis led the Bulldogs with four service aces and two kills. Tara Hirsch contributed one ace and three kills. Janessa Wiley, Lindsey Martin and April Tucker played strong on defense. Lisa Mozingo emerged Spring Creek's top server with three aces. Grantham (3-1) improved to 1-0 in Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference Division II play. The Bulldogs are the guests of Mount Olive next Monday afternoon.

Mount Olive d. Rosewood 25-15, 25-14, 25-12 -- Lauren Darden and Hannah McArthur each served two aces, while Clarice Sherard provided one. The Chargers scored 16 points with Alejandra Ontiverios on serve. Hannah Lewis and Melissa Ewers played well on defense for Mount Olive (3-1), which plays host to Grantham next Monday. Kayla Bennett, Taylor Johnson and Julie Rhodes each turned in a solid performance for the Eagles. It was the WCMSAC Division II opener for both teams.

Norwayne d. Goldsboro 25-3, 25-4, 25-5 -- The Cobras tallied 20 points on Amber Brock's serve and 10 with Jennifer Warren at the service line. Norwayne (2-0) won its Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference Division I opener and entertains Spring Creek today.

Eastern Wayne d. Brogden 25-13, 27-25, 25-17 -- The Warriors picked up 11 points with Mollie Musgrave on serve. Kate McMillian and Emily Northington each had good service games in the three-set win. Eastern Wayne (3-1, 1-0 WCMSAC) entertains Greenwood next Monday afternoon.

Frink d. Rochelle 25-14, 22-25, 15-6 -- Jordan Hudson served four aces for the Cavaliers, who claimed the Greene-Lenoir County Conference game. Teammate Jessica Kennedy added two aces.

Frink d. Rochelle 25-20, 25-15 -- Alex Allen and Danielle Baker each provided three aces for Frink in the non-conference contest. The Cavaliers scored six points with Telisha Johnson on serve. Frink (3-1, 2-0 GLC) travels to Woodington on Wednesday.
