Eastern Wayne blanks South Central in ECC opener
WINTERVILLE -- Joe Gossett started and finished the scoring for Eastern Wayne in a 3-0 victory against Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference opponent South Central.
It was the league opener for both teams.
"In stretches, we looked quite good and were able to play a relatively controlled possession game," Eastern Wayne coach Jorg Wagner said. "South Central's quickness was a concern throughout the match as they were able to give chase and provide a fair amount of pressure in the back and midfield.
"They are a much-improved team, especially defensively."
Wagner said the Falcons played a more organized game and keeper Dylan Lawrence recorded some "fantastic saves" against the Warriors.
The teams appeared headed for a scoreless first half until the 36-minute mark. Nickolai Rosinski served a corner kick into the box toward Gossett, who blasted a low, long-post finish from 10 yards out.
Bobby Gambella connected on a shot to the lower left corner after a low cross from Jin Lee in the 47th minute. Gossett concluded the scoring with a goal tap-in after a light scramble in the box.
Eastern Wayne (3-2) outshot South Central 29-3 and had 12 corner kicks.
Senior keeper Stephen Stackhouse earned the shutout in goal.
"As the first match of our conference campaign, the win was especially important for our confidence," Wagner said. "The race for the title will be very tight this year and, assuming that we can win most of our home dates, the away records might turn out to be crucial."
The Warriors entertain Kinston at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Meanwhile, South Central (2-3) plays host to Garner the same evening.

Davis scored twice in the first 10 minutes and completed the natural hat trick with a mark in the 50th minute. Teammate Taylor Beamon provided the Golden Falcons' final goal in the 63rd minute.
"We played everybody last night," Aycock head coach Kevin Adkins said. "Kinston has a young ball club, but they hustled."

The Eagles (3-5-1) travel to Ayden-Grifton on Wednesday.
N. Johnston
settles for tie
STANHOPE -- Unlike its previous outing against non-conference opponent Southern Nash, shots were a premium for North Johnston on Monday evening.
The visiting Panthers converted their first shot -- off a corner kick -- in the second minute and escaped with a 1-1 tie against the Firebirds.
"I think we relaxed a little bit and we thought it was just a matter of time before we got another one, and we never did," said North Johnston coach Brent Walston, whose team scored six goals against Southern last Thursday. "We continued to control possession in the midfield and did a good job of transitioning from defense to offense, but any loose ball we served up towards the front, they were more aggressive than we were.
"Their sweeper Victor Garcia played an excellent game."
The Firebirds, of the Big Eight North 3-A Conference, received a first-half goal from Carmelo Autunez. Giovanni Franco was credited with the assist.
North Johnston keepers Jay Pittman and Josh Cooper combined for seven saves.
