Soccer

MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive men's soccer plays its first-ever home contest as a regionally-ranked team when archrival Barton College comes calling in their NCAA Division II Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference match scheduled for Wednesday.

Kickoff is 4 p.m. at Trojan Field.

One week after earning its first-ever regional ranking, Mount Olive (4-1-0 , 1-0-0 CVAC) moved up two spots to No. 6 in this week's Adidas/NSCAA Division II southeast regional poll.

The Trojans are coming off a 4-1 win at Anderson Saturday in their CVAC opener.

Eastern Wayne graduate Cory Worrell scored his eighth goal of the season and has scored at least one goal in each Mount Olive victory. Worrell is more than halfway towards his scoring total of 13 goals last season.

Reid Clewis, who did not score any goals last season as a midfielder, already has six goals since moving to a forward position.

His goal 10 seconds into the second half helped stop an Anderson rally Saturday.

Barton (1-2-1, 0-1-1) played Coker to a 1-1 tie Saturday.

In last season's meeting at Wilson, Charles Williams scored a goal as the Trojans and Barton battled to a 2-2 tie.

Mount Olive's 4-1-0 record marks the Trojans' best start since opening the 2000 season with a 4-0-0 mark.

Tennis

WILMINGTON -- Mount Olive College tennis players Rafael Bustos and Camilo Sabogal won two doubles matches against Division I opponents before falling to a doubles team from N.C. State in the men's doubles championship match at the Landfall/UNCW Tennis Invitational.

Mount Olive, the lone non-Division I team in the field, which included players from Coastal Carolina, Duke, East Carolina, North Carolina, N.C. State, UNC Greensboro and UNC-Wilmington.

The three-day tournament concluded Sunday.

Bustos and Sabogal defeated a doubles team from North Carolina 8-1 in the first round, then outlasted a team from UNC-Wilmington 9-8 (4) in the semifinals. Bustos and Sabogal fell 8-4 in the championship match.

In men's singles, Bustos won the consolation championship of the "Teal Bracket," defeating Grant Holland of UNC-Wilmington 7-5, 6-3 in the final match. Bustos took David Mellis of Coastal Carolina to three sets in the first round before falling 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, then defeated Ben Kotwall of UNC-Wilmington 6-0, 6-0 in the consolation semifinals.

Sabogal placed seventh in the Teal Bracket, finishing with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Kotwall.

In women's doubles, Lucia Henkle and Mariana Shimoda placed seventh after an 8-4 win over a doubles team from East Carolina.

Henkle finished sixth in women's singles in the "Navy Bracket," defeating Zandy Overcash of East Carolina 6-2, 6-0 in the consolation semifinals before falling 6-1, 6-0 to Marie Matrka of Coastal Carolina in the fifth-place match.

Shimoda fell 6-2, 6-2 to Alex Smith of East Carolina in the seventh-place match of the "Teal Bracket."

Volleyball

MOUNT OLIVE -- First-year head volleyball coach Sasha Gutor gets his first taste of the Mount Olive-Barton rivalry this evening as the Trojans head up the road to Wilson to face Barton in an NCAA Division II Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference volleyball match.

Game time is 6:30 p.m.

The Trojans (5-3, 2-0 CVAC) opened the season with four straight wins, but posted a 1-3 mark at the Capital City Classic in Charleston, W. Va. over the weekend.

They won both of their CVAC matches on the road, posting wins at Belmont Abbey and Queens earlier this month.

Junior outside hitter Heidi Busch leads the Trojans with 5.08 kills per game, followed by sophomore middle hitter Anna Luft with a 4.08 average. Luft also leads the team in aces and blocks.

Junior setter Sara Christie is averaging 11.25 assists per game.

Barton (1-8, 0-4) is coming off a 3-1 loss at home against Pfeiffer Friday.

Mount Olive won both of last year's matches with both contests going the full five games.
