College volleyball -- Trojans finish 1-3 at Charleston

CHARLESTON, W. Va. -- The Mount Olive College volleyball team finished 1-3 in the regionally-tough Capital City Volleyball Classic contested this weekend at Charleston (W. Va.) University.
Junior outside hitter Heidi Busch led four Trojans in double figures with 17 kills as Mount Olive escaped Slippery Rock (Pa.) University 27-30, 30-23, 20-30, 30-23, 15-12 on Friday evening. Mount Olive opened the tournament with a 33-35, 24-30, 31-29, 17-30 setback against the host Eagles.
Wayne State (Mich.) and Indiana (Pa.) University each handed the Trojans a loss during play Saturday.
Mount Olive (5-3) returns to action Tuesday at archrival Barton College in an NCAA Division II Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference match at Wilson Gymnasium. The Trojans conclude their 10-game road swing the next day at CVAC foe St. Andrews Presbyterian College.

ECU finishes 1-2
WINTHROP, S.C. -- East Carolina senior Paige Howell collected 15 kills in three matches as the Pirates finished 1-2 in the Winthrop/Hilton Garden Invitational at the Winthrop Coliseum.
Howell posted eight kills in the Pirates' 30-19, 30-24, 30-13 victory against in-state foe UNC Greensboro. The former Charles B. Aycock standout managed three kills in a loss to Winthrop (23-30, 21-30, 13-30) and four kills in a 22-30, 28-30, 23-30 setback against Belmont.
The Pirates fell to 5-3 overall.
