Warriors drop Goldsboro for first win of season

Eastern Wayne snapped its nine-match losing streak with a hardfought 16-25, 25-21, 25-22, 21-25, 15-11 victory against county rival Goldsboro on Thursday afternoon.

"They gave us everything they had and we gave them everything we had, and just edged them out," Eastern Wayne coach Bruce Burridge said. "Goldsboro is an improved team."

The Warriors (1-9) improved to 1-4 in Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference play. They entertain archrival Southern Wayne next Tuesday at 5 p.m.

North Lenoir

spikes Rosewood

LAGRANGE -- Randi Moulton provided a season-high 15 kills as North Lenoir stopped Rosewood 25-14, 25-19, 25-19 in a non-conference match Thursday afternoon at Wooten Gymnasium.

Moulton and Rachel Cromer each had five blocks.

Shannon Plymouth added six kills for the Hawks, who picked up their 10th win in 11 tries.

Rosewood middle hitter Jessica Hill, a senior, recorded a match-high 12 blocks to go along with six kills and two digs. Hannah Aycock added four kills, while Morgan Wheeler chipped in three kills and four blocks.

Stephanie Rhodes, Kasey Grey and Katy Morris combined for five kills.

North Lenoir travels to archrival South Lenoir in the Eastern Plains 2-A opener for both teams next Tuesday.

Rosewood (7-2) visits North Johnston next Tuesday.

Panthers end

three-match skid

KENLY -- North Johnston ended its three-match losing streak with a 25-18, 20-25, 25-23, 25-15 decision against county archrival Princeton in Carolina 1-A action Thursday afternoon.

Stephanie Daughtry provided a team-leading seven kills, while Nicole Hargis added six for the Bulldogs. Teammates Kaitlyn Haddock and Sarah Gibbs each contributed five kills.

Daughtry, Brittany Rose and Kortnie Yutzy combined for 13 digs on defense.

Melissa Worley dished out 20 assists.

Princeton (6-5) suffered its first conference loss in four matches and travels to Union next Monday afternoon.

North Johnston rose to 6-3 overall, 1-2 in the conference.

Tigers prevail

in Super Six play

WARSAW -- James Kenan opened Super Six 1-A Conference play with a 25-18, 25-15, 24-26, 25-13 victory against county rival Wallace-Rose Hill at Harmon Gymnasium.

The Tigers received strong play from Taylor Lanier, Jordan Griffin and Alisha Taber.

James Kenan (4-4) visits Goldsboro High next Monday and continues Super Six play Tuesday afternoon at Hobbton.

Farmville Central

sweeps S. Creek

FARMVILLE -- Defending Carolina 1-A Conference champion Farmville Central swept Spring Creek 25-18, 25-13, 25-8 on Thursday evening.

The Gators scored nine points with Lorenda Brogden on serve.

Spring Creek (3-6, 1-3 CC) travels to Ayden-Grifton next Tuesday.

Greene Central

LITTLEFIELD -- Brianna Stanton and Teketia May each collected seven kills as Greene Central eased past Ayden-Grifton 26-24, 25-13, 23-25, 25-22 in a non-conference match Wednesday afternoon.

The Rams scored 25 points with Peoria Wade on serve, and 20 with Amber Morris at the service line.

Greene Central (2-6) entertains South Central next Monday afternoon.

Washington takes

Saints in four

DUDLEY -- Washington visited and exited with a 25-21, 21-25, 25-16, 25-22 victory against Southern Wayne in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play Thursday.

Charlie Garten paced the Saints with three kills, four aces and five digs. Jaimie Neimond added two blocks, three kills and three aces.

Rachel Reynolds had five digs.

"This team is becoming just that," Saints coach Brian Bandy said. "We are starting to play as a unit now. I hope we can break into a winning streak. It's going to be a tight race and we have a long way to go."

Southern Wayne (2-10, 1-4 ECC) goes to Eastern Wayne next Tuesday.

Princeton settles

for two-day split

KENLY -- Brittany Atkinson served four aces and Cynthia Peedin provided three as Princeton endured a 25-19, 18-25, 17-25 loss against county archrival North Johnston in Carolina 1-A play Thursday.

Bulldogs coach Holly Sullivan said her team had good net play and served well in the opening game.

"The second and third games, we struggled with serves, sets and spikes. North Johnston was quick on their feet and we were not quick enough."

Peedin also contributed two kills for Princeton, which dipped to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in the conference. Carrie Croon and Leikendra Atkinson each contributed an ace.

North Johnston (3-3) remained unbeaten in Carolina Conference play at 3-0.

Brittany Atkinson led the offense with two aces and Heather Smith helped anchor the defense with three digs in a 25-12, 25-10, non-conference victory against Smithfield-Selma on Wednesday afternoon.

"The team played really good," Sullivan said. "They were moving to the ball and setting the plays. I was very pleased with the way the girls communicated with each other and moved the ball."

Atkinson provided a team-best seven digs defensively. Tiesha Williams contributed one ace, two digs and two kills. Leikendra Atkinson chipped one ace and served well.

Peedin and Kortland Stanfield also played well in the win.

Golden Falcons

throttle Patriots

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock remained unbeaten in four Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference matches with a 25-14, 25-6 victory against West Carteret.

Brooke Edgerton and Kaitlyn Stafford served four aces apiece for the Golden Falcons.

Aycock (7-1) is the guest of South Central next Tuesday.

Hawks fall

to Rosewood

LAGRANGE -- Kaitlyn Howard recorded five kills as North Lenoir suffered a 25-14, 25-21 non-conference loss against unbeaten Rosewood on Thursday afternoon at Wooten Gymnasium.

Aubrey Reinhard served a match-high nine aces for the Eagles, while Courtney Hill turned in a nine-kill performance. Reinhard and Roxie Phillips combined for 10 assists.

Kasie Braswell, Chandra Meadows and Ashley Williams (three kills) contributed to the straight-set win.

The Hawks (6-5) are the guests of county rival South Lenoir next Tuesday.

Rosewood (9-0) visits North Johnston next Tuesday.

Gators notch

Carolina 1-A win

FARMVILLE -- Brittany Billups paced Spring Creek with six kills in a 25-19, 25-18 victory at Carolina 1-A Conference opponent Farmville Central on Thursday.

It was the Gators' first league win of the season.

Spring Creek (5-4) travels to Ayden-Grifton next Tuesday.

handles Bulldogs

WARSAW -- James Kenan started its Super Six 1-A Conference season with a 25-14, 25-9 victory against county rival Wallace-Rose Hill at Harmon Gymnasium.

Nicole Langston, Kandice Helton, Lauren Houston and Hannah Adams each turned in solid all-around efforts for the Tigers.

James Kenan (4-3) travels to Hobbton next Tuesday.

Saints march

past Pam Pack

DUDLEY -- Lindsey Pearsall registered four kills, three aces and three digs as Southern Wayne bounced back to defeat Washington 16-25, 25-16, 25-15 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play Thursday.

Brittney Smith added two kills, two digs and two aces for the Saints.

Southern Wayne (4-8, 3-2 ECC) is the guest of archrival Eastern Wayne next Tuesday.

Middle schools

Frink d. Greene County 25-17, 25-10 in a Greene-Lenoir County Conference match Wednesday afternoon. The Cavaliers scored 13 points with Jessica Kennedy on serve, 10 with Jordan Hudson on serve and nine with Megan Johnson on serve.

Greene County d. Frink 25-19, 9-25, 15-12 in a non-conference match Wednesday afternoon. The Cavaliers tallied 11 points with Alex Allen on serve and 10 with Danielle Baker at the service line. Frink (1-1) entertains county rival Rochelle next Monday afternoon.

Rosewood d. Greenwood 25-16, 16-25, 25-20, 19-25, 15-13 as Kayla Bennett served three aces. Heather Johnson and Paige Babb each contributed two aces, while Caroline Tart added one.

Rosewood d. Goldsboro 25-8, 25-20, 25-18 as Paige Babb emerged the top server with three aces. Brittany Cabala had two aces; while Kayla Bennett and Julie Rose each had one. Rosewood (2-1) entertains Mount Olive next Monday afternoon.
