Prep roundup -- EW soccer finishes strong at Invitational

WILSON -- Eastern Wayne bounced back off of a 2-1 loss to Roanoke Rapids on Friday with a 2-0 win over host Greenfield School Saturday at the Greenfield Invitational.

The Warriors outshot the state-ranked Knights 14-4 on Saturday as Andrew Corley and Jin Lee tallied goals for Eastern Wayne (2-2). Joe Gossett and Eric Bourgeois had one assist each with both goals coming in the first half.

On Friday, the Warriors held a 16-7 edge in shooting with Rob Cagle converting Eastern Wayne's lone goal on a penalty kick 13 minutes into the second half. Roanoke Rapids' Kevin Burnette scored the game-winning goal.

In other Invitational games, Wilmington Hoggard defeated Greenfield 6-0 on Friday, while Hoggard and Roanoke Rapids finished in a 1-1 tie on Saturday. With points awarded for wins and shutouts, Hoggard finished first in the Invitational with Roanoke Rapids taking second. The Warriors finished third and the Knights took fourth.

The Warriors return to action on Sept. 13 at South Central.

Tennis

G. Central JV blanks Raiders

HENDERSON -- Greene Central remained unbeaten in four outings with a 9-0, non-conference victory at Southern Vance.

Brittany Horton, Elizabeth Cooper, Codee Grant, Sarah Beth Carraway, Ashley Grant and Grayson Daniell each claimed a straight-set victory in singles. Horton and Cooper, the Nos. 1 and 2 seeds, respectively, each collected a shutout.

The Rams lost just four games in singles play overall.

Greene Central continues play next Tuesday at Rocky Mount Senior High.

Faith falls

at Liberty

Faith Christian's Christy Charles had four kills and two aces as the Conquerors fell 25-21, 11-25, 21-25, 13-25 to Liberty Christian of Durham on Friday.

Elizabeth Clarke added three kills for Faith (0-2, 0-1 conference), who travels to face Berean Christian in Fayetteville on Tuesday.

Middle school football

Brogden 12, Dillard 8 -- Kenny Casper tallied touchdowns on runs of 5 and 50 yards for the unbeaten Rams. Charles Broggi paced the Brogden defense with six tackles, including two for lost yardage, and a fumble recovery. Scott Holloman recovered a fumble and recorded five tackles, along with Adrian Amerson. Josh Rodriguez recovered a fumble and had four stops. Brogden (2-0) entertains Grantham next Thursday. Dillard (0-2) is the guest of Norwayne the same afternoon.
