Trojan athletics in full swing

MOUNT OLIVE -- The first full weekend of Mount Olive College athletics begins tonight, and all of the Trojans' fall sports teams are in action this weekend. All of the teams are on the road, except for women's soccer, which will be at home Sunday.

Volleyball opens Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference play with a pair of matches on the road, starting this evening at Belmont Abbey. Match time is 6:30 p.m. at Belmont, N.C. The Trojans head down the road to Charlotte for a 1 p.m. contest against Queens. Mount Olive (2-0) swept both teams in the regular season last year, although the Trojans had to rally for a five-game victory over Queens in the first round of last year's CVAC Tournament. All-American Heidi Busch is averaging 5.17 kills per game in two matches this season, while freshman Sam Mitchell has a 4.17 kills per game average. Tonight's contest is Belmont Abbey's season opener. Queens is 1-2 this season.

The men's and women's cross country teams hit the road Saturday morning as they compete in the Campbell University Cross Country Invitational. The men's race begins at 9 a.m., followed by the women's race at 10 a.m. Junior and Eastern Wayne High School graduate Tim Insley leads the men's team, while senior Charlene Spadaccini returns for the women's team.

Men's soccer tries to stay on a roll this weekend as Mount Olive heads to Rocky Mount to compete in the North Carolina Wesleyan Tournament. The Trojans face Guilford Saturday, then take on North Carolina Wesleyan Sunday. Kickoff for both matches is 3:30 p.m. Mount Olive (2-0) has outscored its first two opponents 15-2 as Eastern Wayne HS grad Cory Worrell has five goals in two matches, including his first collegiate hat trick Wednesday against Averett. Reid Clewis has back-to-back two-goal games for the Trojans.

Women's soccer will try to get back in the win column Sunday as the Trojans play host to Converse in a non-conference contest. Match time is 1 p.m. at Trojan Field. Mount Olive (1-1-0 overall, 0-1-0 CVAC) is coming off a 1-0 loss at Pfeiffer Wednesday in a match decided by a penalty kick. The Trojans, which tied a school single-game scoring record with seven goals Tuesday against North Greenville Tuesday, hope to avenge last year's 7-1 loss to Converse, which enters Sunday's contest with an 0-2 mark.
