Michael Martin Memorial tourney successful

MOUNT OLIVE -- The totals are in and according to Mount Olive College officials, the College received aproximately $25,000 from the 17th Annual Michael Martin Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament held at Southern Wayne Country Club.

The tournament, which began in 1988, is held annually in memory of NC Highway Patrolman, Mike Martin, an MOC alumnus who was killed in the line of duty. Since the scholarship fund was started, over $182,216 has been raised and placed in an endowment fund that supports two scholarships at Mount Olive College.

This is the third year that the tournament has had underwriting sponsorship from Friendly Mart convenience stores. Over 100 additional sponsors from area businesses and golfers who are friends of the College, friends of the Martin family, and in large measure by members of law enforcement agencies also contributed to the event.

The team of Judson Pope, David Bunch, Bill Williams, and James Jeanes fired a 17-under par to win the tournament. Following each round of play, participants were treated to a catered meal of barbecue pork and chicken. During this time, A. N. and Ann Martin, parents of the late Mike Martin, mingled with the guests and shared fond memories of their son.

Also attending the event were Eric Royster of Youngsville and Lindsey Snyder of Goldsboro, the 2004 scholarship recipients. Royster is a senior business major and a member of the men's golf team. Snyder is a junior business management major and a member of the women's golf team.

I appreciate your efforts, Mount Olive College appreciates your support, and our students appreciate your generosity," stated J. William Byrd, president of Mount Olive College.
