RALEIGH -- Traditional power Needham Broughton -- the six-time defending N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 4-A champion -- turned in a dominating, 9-0 performance against previously-unbeaten Greene Central on Thursday afternoon.
The Rams fell to 5-1, while the Caps improved to 3-0.
"I was extremely pleased with my team's play today ... definitely our best tennis of the season," veteran Rams coach Donald Clark said. "Broughton has had the premier girls' tennis program in our state for a long time. It is a joy to me as a coach to see my girls competing with such quality players."
Holly Mace mixed up her groundstrokes and lobs throughout the match, and hit balls deep to the baseline in a 6-4, 6-2 loss against Ali Dixon at No. 4. It was Mace's first loss in five outings.
Harrell, at No. 5 singles, played solid in a 6-2, 6-1 loss against Jenny Kirk Andrews. Harrell played consistently from her forehand and hit aggressive groundstrokes throughout the match.
