Southern Wayne notches first victory, tops Vikings

DUDLEY -- Frustrated from its previous two outings, Southern Wayne scratched in the win column Tuesday afternoon against Kinston. Katie Westfall ignited a 13-0 run in the third game as the Saints prevailed 25-20, 25-10, 25-8.

It was the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference opener for both teams.

"This will should be a great morale boost for this program," second-year Saints coach Brian Bandy said. "We are better than our record states and starting off the conference slate with a win is always important."

Brooke Wiggins and Scarlett Joyner collected two kills apiece.

"We are beginning to see just what we are capable of and these young ladies are feeding off their own enthusiasm," Bandy said. "This win made them hungry for more and that's exactly where they need to be."

Southern Wayne (1-2, 1-0 ECC) plays host to Spring Creek this afternoon.

C.B. Aycock rallies

past Goldsboro

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock erased a nine-point deficit and fought off two game points in a 25-16, 25-13, 28-26 victory against county rival Goldsboro on Tuesday afternoon.

It was the Eastern Carolina 3-A opener for both teams.

Goldsboro built a 10-1 lead in the third game and had Aycock, the reigning ECC champion, on the ropes. The Cougars had two chances to force a fourth game, but the Golden Falcons erased the two game points to closed out the match 3-0.

"We were sluggish. We were not moving," Golden Falcons coach Davis Harris said. "Goldsboro is going to win some matches this year. They are vastly improved and are not a bump-back team any more. They're actually setting and hitting.

"They're doing a good job over there."

Lindsey Newman led Aycock with 12 kills. Jenny Jackson and Stephanie Ballance each provided five kills.

The Golden Falcons (2-0) beat an ECC opponent for the 40th time in 45 tries. They continue play at home today against Princeton.

Rebels collect

non-league win

CALYPSO -- Bethany Malcolm turned in a solid floor game as North Duplin seized the final two games in a 25-10, 23-25, 25-11, 25-12 non-conference win against Hobbton on Tuesday afternoon.

Malcolm notched a match-high 12 kills to go along with one block, five digs and four service aces. The Rebels tallied 16 points with Malcolm on serve.

"I'm happy to get this win, but there is still a lot we need to work on before conference play starts," said North Duplin coach Heather Best. "We've improved on a lot of aspects, a new rotation and new players, and they've adjusted well.

"Bethany had a great game."

Sierra Ward contributed seven kills, two aces and one block.

Brittany Carr emerged the top server with six aces, while Julie Ivey had five. Emily Deibert added two aces and two kills.

North Duplin (2-1) opens its Carolina 1-A Conference schedule at home next Tuesday against Spring Creek.

Hawks soar

past Beddingfield

LAGRANGE -- Randi Moulton delivered an 11-kill performance as North Lenoir hammered Wilson Beddingfield 25-12, 25-23, 25-21 in a non-conference match at Wooten Gymnasium.

Brittany Sanders and (three blocks) added six kills apiece for the Hawks, who remained unbeaten in five outings. They continue play at home Thursday against East Duplin.

Chanee Lynch served two aces.

Panthers sweep

host Wilson Hunt

WILSON -- North Johnston remained perfect in four outings with a 25-20, 25-13, 25-16 triumph against Wilson Hunt on Tuesday afternoon.

Additional match details were not available.

The Panthers entertain Lakewood on Thursday.

Terra Ceia dropped the opening set, but came to defeat Wayne Country Day 23-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-12 in a non-conference match Tuesday afternoon.

"We made a lot of mistakes on our side that cost us the game," said Chargers coach Juliet Jones, whose team lost its second straight match.

Amanda Knutson paced Wayne Country Day with two aces, three kills and two digs. Amanda Benton provided two aces, three kills and one dig; while Heather Daughtery emerged with four kills and one ace.

Laura Ziemer had four aces and two kills.

Stephanie Knutson (one ace) and Erin Taylor (one kill) also contributed in the four-set loss.

Wayne Country Day (1-2) travels to Arendell-Parrott Academy on Thursday.

Katie Connelley, Christy Weaver, Lindsey Pearsall and Haley Gerstler each had a pair of kills in the straight-set win. Brittney Smith provided one kill and two aces.

Southern Wayne entertains Spring Creek at 4:30 p.m. today.

Warriors clipped

Eastern Wayne seized the opening game against South Central, but the visiting Falcons rallied for a 23-25, 25-18, 25-21 victory in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference opener for both teams.

The Warriors fell to 1-2 overall.

Chargers come

back for victory

Visiting Terra Ceia caught Wayne Country Day flat-footed in the opening game, however, the Chargers bounced back for 20-25, 25-12, 25-17 win Tuesday afternoon.

Ellen Elmore sparked the Chargers with a match-high nine kills and one ace. Teammate Stephanie Sykes contributed four kills and four aces, while Brianne Radford chipped in one kill and four aces.

Heather Price, Natalie Bryan and Emily Best combined for four aces.

"They did a great job," said Chargers coach Juliet Jones. "They kept their communication and energy going."

Wayne Country Day (1-2) entertains Eastern Wayne Middle School this afternoon.

The Hawks scored 18 points with Brynne Fulghum on serve.
