Football -- Glaspie scores pair of TDs for Tigers

WARSAW -- Sweet revenge.

Denied the opportunity to present head football coach Kevin Motsinger a victory in his varsity coaching debut a year ago, James Kenan did it right the second time. Sophomore Jimmy Glaspie ran for a pair of touchdowns as the Tigers handed Red Springs a 22-14 defeat at Bill Taylor Field on Friday night.

"It was a heckuva game ... a defensive struggle," Motsinger said. "There were times we didn't execute well and couldn't move the ball."

The Tiger defense also turned in some key plays.

Mike Lewis, a senior free safety, and Tyreck Dunn, a junior corner back, each intercepted the Red Springs quarterback and stopped potential scoring drives.

Junior linebacker Alonzo Washington recovered a fumble inside the Tigers' 10-yard line which prevented the Red Devils from possibly cashing in another score.

"On the film, so many people swarmed around him and it looked like there were 750 people inside that pile," Motsinger said. "The ball popped out and Zo got on top of it. Those three plays were huge."

James Kenan appeared to score when veteran quarterback Kelvin Miller dove in from the 3-yard line. Miller took a helmet to the knee on the play and the officials ruled that he didn't break the goal-line plane.

Freshman quarterback Shawn Jones stepped into the huddle and perfectly executed the pitch, which went to Glaspie for the touchdown. Glaspie added the first of two, two-point conversions to give the Tigers an 8-0 advantage at intermission.

Each team scored twice in the third.

The Tigers, coming off a 5-7 season, amassed less than 200 yards total offense in the season-opening contest. They picked up 124 on the ground and 58 passing.

"We've got to get better before this Friday," said Motsinger, whose team travels to Robersonville Roanoke. "Roanoke is loaded and can flat play. It's that time of year where you have to get better every week and if you don't, you don't deserve to be in the Super Six."
