Gators drop Southern Wayne

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Spring Creek opened the season with a season-opening 25-19, 25-15, 25-20 win over Southern Wayne at home on Tuesday.

Juniors Courtney Oxendine and Lorenda Brogden and senior Melissa Campian led the way for the Gators.

"With only three returning players, the girls are playing well and working well together," first year coach Deanna Morris said.

Spring Creek (1-0) returns to action on Thursday at home against Midway, while Southern Wayne (0-1) hosts Wilson Hunt on Thursday.

Eagles pound

Midway

Rosewood's Jessica Hill smashed 10 kills and served on five points as the Eagles swept Midway 25-16, 25-23, 25-17 at home on Tuesday.

Hannah Aycock served on 16 points, while Kelli Gurley and Abigail Barrow served on seven and six points, respectively.

"We had great play on the court and communication," Rosewood coach Jennifer Cochran said.

The Eagles (1-0) travel to Hobbton on Thursday.

NL sweeps past

rival Kinston

KINSTON -- Shannon Plymouth collected three kills and two blocks as North Lenoir rolled past Kinston 25-4, 25-6, 25-15 on Tuesday afternoon.

Chanee Lynch and Randi Moulton combined for five aces.

The Hawks (2-0) play host to Kinston on Thursday.

Warriors tumble

at 3-A White Oak

JACKSONVILLE -- Eastern Wayne opened its season with a 25-18, 25-11, 25-15 loss at traditional Class 3-A power White Oak on Tuesday afternoon.

"We played well, but we need to iron out some rough spots," third-year Warriors head coach Bruce Burridge said. "White Oak was definitely on their game."

Rebels roll

in three sets

HOBBTON -- North Duplin's Sierra Ward had four kills and two aces as the Rebels defeated Hobbton on the road 26-24, 25-21, 25-15 in their season opening match.

North Duplin's Bethany Malcolm had two aces and two kills, while Brittany Carr added four aces. Emily Deibert provided three aces and two kills.

"We've got a lot of room to improve, but overall I was pleased with their first game," North Duplin coach Heather Best said.

The Rebels (1-0) travel to Lakewood on Thursday.

N. Johnston reaches

championship match

SMITHFIELD -- North Johnston advanced to the title game of the 2nd annual Johnston County Volleyball Tournament with victories against South Johnston and archrival Princeton.

The Panthers swept the host Spartans 25-17, 25-13. They stumbled in the opening set against the Bulldogs before taking a 19-25, 25-19, 25-17 victory.

North Johnston (2-0) faces either SSS, Clayton or West Johnston in the title game Thursday on its home court.

Eastern Wayne

rallies past W. Oak

JACKSONVILLE -- Eastern Wayne dropped the opening set against host White Oak on Tuesday afternoon, but claimed back to claim a 24-26, 25-21, 25-19 season-opening win.

Coach Bruce Burridge cited the play of Sherina Bryant and Alex Cottle.

"We played a pretty decent first game," Burridge said. "Then we came back and put it together the second and third game by playing strong."

KINSTON -- Brynne Fulghum served a pair of aces as North Lenoir emerged victorious 25-14, 25-9 against county rival Kinston on Tuesday afternoon.

Kaitlyn Howard provided an ace and two kills. Nattie Williamson contributed two kills.

The Hawks (1-1) entertain Kinston at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Rebels sweep

HOBBTON - North Duplin's Vanessa Lynch served on 14 points and provided three aces as the Rebels claimed a 25-15, 25-18 win at Hobbton on Tuesday.

Kayla Myers served on 11 points and had four aces, while Courtney Jackson served on nine points and had five aces.

North Duplin (1-0) travels to Lakewood on Thursday.

Rosewood wins

Rosewood's Kasie Braswell served on nine points to help guide Rosewood to a 25-19, 25-15 win at home over Hobbton on Tuesday.

Aubrey Reinhard served on eight points in the win for the Eagles (1-0).

Ashley Williams and Courtney Hill were praised for great play at the net, while Roxie Phillips (defense), Jamie Bold (setting) and Ashley Shaw (passing) were also applauded.

The Eagles (1-0) travel to Hobbton on Thursday.
