K-Tribe tops Salem, back in first place in Southern Division

KINSTON -- Brian Slocum locked in after a rocky start and the Kinston Indians took advantage of seven Salem walks en route to a 9-3 win over the Avalanche at historic Grainger Stadium Monday night.

The victory moved Kinston to 30-18 in the second half and 75-42 overall, a season-high 33 games over the .500 mark. The win, combined with Wilmington's defeat of Winston-Salem, puts the Indians back in first place by a game over the Warthogs. Salem dropped to 21-29 and 59-61.

Slocum won his seventh straight start and improved to a league-best 14-5 with the victory. He allowed three runs on four hits, walked one, and set a season-high with 10 strikeouts. Juan Lara and Travis Foley each followed with two innings of hitless relief. Rodaway (5-7) was charged with seven runs and seven hits in just 4.1 innings. He walked three and struck out three.

Salem got just one hit in the final eight innings.

Shaun Larkin led the offense, going 3-4 with four RBI. Snyder and Eider Torres both had two-hit nights, and Herrera picked up three RBI. All told, the middle third of the order (Osborn, Larkin and Herrera) went a combined 5-11 with eight RBI and two runs scored.

Game two in the four-game series is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday.
