Princeton falls to SSS in opening meet

PRINCETON -- Smithfield-Selma won a pair of races Monday from host Princeton in the opening cross-country meet for both teams.

The Spartans picked up an automatic win in the boys race with only four runners from Princeton -- one short of the minimum for a team. Smithfield's Klye Carpenter won the overall race with a time of 18 minutes, five seconds. Princeton's Phillip Croom was third overall and the highest Bulldog finisher after clocking a 22:57.

Croom was followed by teammates Jonathan Yelverton (5th, 23:50), Josh Holmes (7th, 26:13), and Julius Beasley (9th, 30:42).

In the girls race, Smithfield-Selma took a 19-44 win over Princeton with Stephanie Williams winning the overall race. The highest Princeton finisher was Courtney Yancey, finishing fourth in a time of 27:08.

After Yancey came Britney Stewart (5th, 28:10), Haylee Wood (9th, 29:48), Alicia McKay (11th, 32:50), Ashley Heath (15th, 36:10), Amanda Martin (16th) and Jennifer Tyndall (18th).

Princeton will host Charles B. Aycock on Wednesday.

Saint boys win dual meet;

Eagle runners are first

Only one team officially won Monday's season-opening meet between Rosewood and Southern Wayne -- but a lot more than one team ran the race.

The Saint boys were the only team to field more than five runners, and by rule the Saints won the meet over their hosts since Rosewood did not have five runners. Southern Wayne did not bring a girls team and Rosewood only had four runners, but all 15 athletes took to the 3.1-mile layout around the Rosewood school.

Rosewood freshman Terrance Williams won the meet -- his first-ever race -- in 21 minutes, 55 seconds. The Saints Josh Richards was second, just behind Williams at 21:56.

Richards led two other Saints runners across the line, with Douglas Niemond third at 22:24 and Jafari Ward fourth at 22:32.

Stephanie Behrend led the Eagles girls in 32 minutes flat.

Rosewood will be hosting Wayne Country Day School on Thursday.
