Wolfe attends national Football Summit

Bob Wolfe, a Goldsboro native and the current head football coach at Apex High School, had the opportunity to attend the fourth annual NFL Youth Football Summit last week in Canton, Ohio.

Wolfe is one of 51 coaches selected from across the United States to join with 100 youth coaches at the NFL Hall of Fame during induction weekend for a series of seminars.

Wolfe was honored by the Carolina Panthers last year when he was selected as the High School Coach of the Year in North and South Carolina.

Three generations of Thomases

to play for ECU

Dave Thomas III has verbally committed to play football at East Carolina University.

It's not as if his family couldn't show him the way to Greenville.

Thomas' commitment to the Pirate football program makes him the third generation of his family to play football at ECU. Thomas, a standout and all-state selection from Murfreesboro (Tenn.) Riverdale High, is expected to be a wide receiver or a defensive back.

His father, Dave Thomas Jr., played at ECU from 1980 until 1984 and went on to a coaching career in North Carolina; and his uncles, John Thomas and Greg Thomas, both played for the Pirates.

Dave Jr. coached at Harnett Central High and currently coaches in Murfreesboro. Greg Thomas is the head coach of Class 4-A state champion Greenville Rose and John Thomas is an assistant coach for New Hanover High School.

Their father and Dave III's grandfather, Dave Thomas, played for East Carolina from 1967 until 1960 and is enshrined in the Pirates Hall of Fame. He had a long coaching career, was the former football coach and athletics director at Charles B. Aycock High and recently retired as athletics director for the Wayne County Public Schools.

Volleyball coaches' clinic offered

MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive College is hosting a volleyball coaches clinic Saturday from 9 a.m.-noon at College Hall on the Mount Olive campus.

The clinic is open to public and private high school and middle school coaches in Wayne, Duplin and Sampson Counties. The clinic is being conducted by Mount Olive College head volleyball coach Sasha Gutor and is free of charge.

Coach Gutor enters his second year at Mount Olive College. He has a wealth of international coaching experience, including 10 years as head coach of the Ukrainian Junior Men's Republic Volleyball Team.
