K-Tribe drops Pelicans again on road

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Kinston used a hat-trick of home runs to power its way past Myrtle Beach on Wednesday night, 6-4.

The Indians power surge started in the third inning when Brad Snyder connected for his first homer of the year over the left-field wall. The two-run shot gave Kinston a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, Myrtle Beach's Isaac Lorg lined an RBI single into right-field to score Onil Joseph and put the Pelicans on the board. Two batters later Alonzo Ruelas roped a base hit to left, scoring Brian McCann and tying the score, 2-2.

With Lorg at third and Ruelas at first, Randy Ingle called for a double steal and it worked to perfection. Ruelas stole second, and on the throw, Lorg broke for home and slid across to give the Birds their first lead of the game and of the series, 3-2.

Myrtle Beach would not hold the lead for long as the K-Tribe got back to work in the top of the fifth. With Eider Torres on at first and two outs, a familiar face struck again. Snyder drilled his second homer of the season and his second home run of the night, a deep blast over the center-field wall, giving Kinston the lead 4-3.

In the bottom of the fifth, Myrtle Beach clawed back to tie things up, 4-4, thanks to an RBI double down the left-field line from Timmons, scoring SS Luis Hernandez.

Van Every atoned for his error in the top of the sixth, leading the inning off with a home run over the rightfield wall, his 17th of the season. The Van Every blast gave Kinston a one-run lead, 5-4, and that would be all that they would need to take their third straight from Myrtle Beach.

Myrtle Beach starter Anthony Lerew didn't factor into the decision, tossing five innings and giving up four runs on seven hits. Reliever Jason Richardson (L, 0-3) was charged with the loss after giving up the Van Every homer in the sixth. Kinston starter J.D. Martin (W, 10-9) earned the win after lasting five innings, in which he gave up four runs on five hits and struck out six. Closer Todd Richardson (S, 12) picked up the save, working a perfect 9th.

The finale of the four-game series between the Pelicans and Indians is scheduled to start at 7:05 tonight.

Durham 5, Louisville 4

DURHAM (AP) -- Charles Gipson's RBI-single in the sixth inning proved to be the game-winner as the Durham Bulls held on to beat the Louisville Bats 5-4 on Wednesday night in the International League.

The Bats scored three runs in the eighth thanks to a Durham error and wild pitch, but went down in order in the ninth as Durham's Frank Nunez recorded the save.

Durham jumped out to a 4-1 lead after three innings on a two-run homer by Jared Sandberg and singles by Jason Maxwell and Keith Osik.

Darren Bragg homered for Louisville in the loss.

Jose Veras (5-5) pitched 3 1-3 innings of middle relief for the win. Louisville starter Dustin Moseley (0-3) took the loss, giving up nine hits while striking out six in six innings.

Four Durham batters had two hits apiece in the win, which moved the Bulls within one game of first-place Richmond in the Southern Division.
