Curles throws well at CPL All-Star Game

FLORENCE, S.C. -- Mount Olive College pitcher Weston Curles retired all three batters he faced, including two by strikeout, in his one inning of action at the Coastal Plains League All-Star Game Tuesday at Florence.

Curles was named to the National All-Star Team, which defeated the American All-Star Team 9-1.

Curles, a junior left-hander from Hertford, pitched the fifth inning with the National All-Stars leading 4-0. Curles is playing for the Edenton Steamers this summer and has a 4-0 record. His 2.19 earned run average is the fifth-lowest in the league.

The Coastal Plains League (CPL) is a 12-team summer college baseball league comprised of teams from the Carolinas and Virginia and is divided into three divisions. Teams are made up of players from all college divisions.

Kirkland among four

signed for MOC volleyball

MOUNT OLIVE -- Four recruits have committed to play volleyball at Mount Olive College, it was announced by head volleyball coach Sasha Gutor. Candice Collins, Samantha Mitchell and Ashley Napoles have signed national letters-of-intent, while Alexxis Kirkland, has also committed to Mount Olive.

Kirkland, a 5-foot-8 outside hitter from Goldsboro, was named Eastern Carolina Conference Player of the Year and Goldsboro News-Argus Player of the Year in her senior season at Charles B. Aycock High School. She set a school record with 31 kills against Clayton in the playoffs. A two-time all-conference selection, Kirkland averaged four kills and one block per game.

Collins, a 5-10 outside hitter from Lake Forest, Calif., earned California Interscholastic Federation second team all-league honors at El Toro High School. She was a team captain for three years and was named her team's most valuable offensive player for three years. Off the court, Collins has made missions trips to countries in Africa, Asia and Europe.

Mitchell, a 5-8 outside/middle hitter from Boyd, Wis., earned All-State honorable mention in her senior year at Stanley-Boyd High School. She earned all-area/all-county honors and was a two-time all-conference selection, earning first team honors in her senior season. Her club volleyball team qualified for the 2004 National Invitational Tournament and she was selected to play in the 2003 Pepsi-Cola All-Star Classic Game in Peoria, Ill. Academically, she ranked 18th in a class of 107 students. Off the court, she participates in numerous community service activities, including Relay for Life, Meals On Wheels and Red Cross blood drives.

Napoles, a 5-8 outside hitter from Miami, Fla., helped lead Southwest High School to the state semifinals in her senior year. She was a three-time All-Dade County selection, earning first team honors as a senior. Her team reached the regional semifinals in her sophomore year and the regional final in her junior year.

Napoles, who will also play softball for Mount Olive, was a two-time All-Dade County selection in softball. Academically, Napoles ranked in the top 10 of her class.

Mount Olive posted a record of 27-11 overall and finished second in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference with a 15-3 mark in 2003. The Trojans finished the season ranked No. 7 in the NCAA II Atlantic Region.
