Area sports -- Aycock Jr. Legion advances to Eastern playoffs

PIKEVILLE -- Aycock Junior Legion's Aaron Kline delivered a three-run, bases-clearing double in the bottom of the first as Aycock went on to defeat Snow Hill 8-4 on Saturday night at Charles B. Aycock High School.

The win boosts Aycock (18-4) to the Junior Legion Eastern playoffs at the Eastern Carolina Athletic Park next Wednesday. Snow Hill travels to Garner at 4 p.m. tomorrow with an Eastern playoff berth at stake.

Chris King started on the mound for Aycock and and went 31Ú3 innings. Jackson Massey came on to pick up the win in relief -- finishing the game. Massey retired the side in order in the fifth and sixth and added a solo home run in the bottom of the second.

Bennett Jeffreys went three-for-four with two RBI for Aycock, including a key two-out double in the sixth. Cameron Boswell scored from first on the double to give Aycock its eighth and final run.

Aycock's Will Spence added two hits in four plate appearances with one RBI. Thomas Pilkington, who doubled off of the top of the fence in the second, came in to score on a single by Jeffreys to give Aycock a 6-1 lead.

Second baseman Casey Cole had a solid defensive play in the third inning and provided five assists.

Hunter Chase led Snow Hill with two hits. Richie Turner got the loss on the mound for Snow Hill.

Hurricanes 10-under

advance to final eight

PANAMA CITY, FL. -- The Hurricanes 10-under team improved to 6-1 in a double-elimination tournament in Panama City, Florida and have advanced to the final eight teams.

In game four, the Hurricanes defeated the Tennessee Lady Dragons 10-0 with Micaela Howard picking up the win and Karyel Justo getting the save. Rachel Jordan, Emily Jones and Catherine Ford had two hits each in the win.

The Hurricanes dropped Florida High Intensity 7-0 in game five as Justo got the win, while Brooke Bell had two hits.

The Hurricanes fell to the Texas Bombers 3-0 and and the Chickamauga Lady Trojans 3-1 in games six and seven, respectively. Howard got the loss in game six and bounced back to pick up the win against Chickamauga.

Justo won game seven, while Connor Davis got two hits.

The Hurricanes return to action on Wednesday against the Tennessee Bulldogs.

Mar-Mac wins

District tournament

Chelvis Melton had two hits for Mar-Mac, who defeated Wayne County's 14-13 in Dixie Youth 11-12 District tournament action on Saturday.

Wayne County's Cambric Moye had three hits, including a home run, while Hunter Newsome provided three hits with two doubles. Zack Beacham and Mel Winn added three hits hit each. Lamar Best had two hits as Gerrell Davis had home run.

Chelvis Melton paced Mar-Mac with two hits.

Mar-Mac advances to the Dixie Youth 11-12 state championship in Tabor City on July 23.

Sam Narron

gets no-decision Friday

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK -- Former Eastern Wayne and East Carolina pitcher Sam Narron picked up a no-decision for the Oklahoma Redhawks in five innings of work against the Albequerque Isotopes on Friday.

The Redhawks (AAA Pacific Coast League) lost the game 9-5 and are now 53-39 on the season.

Narron, who is 5-1 with a 4.35 earned run average with Oklahoma, allowed four earned runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and two walks during Friday's stint.
