DUDLEY — Aycock Junior American Legion baseball team beat Wayne County for the first time in three tries Sunday, topping Wayne 8-1 to advance in the Junior Legion tournament.

Aycock took control of the game in the fifth inning as Jackson Massey came on with two runners on and struck out the side to stop a threat. In the next inning Aycock used two Wayne County errors and three hits to score four runs and break the game open.

Massey threw three innings and gave up three hits, striking out six in relief of starter Christopher King, who allowed just two hits through four innings. Joseph Toler was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, while Aaron Kline was 2-for-3 with a double, Will Spence was 2-for-5 with a double and King was 2-for-5. Massey and Thomas Pilkington both hit doubles for Aycock.

Taylor Sutton had the lone extra-base hit for Wayne County, a double that drove in a run in the fourth inning. T.J. Hinson took the loss after five innings of work, with two relief innings from Joseph Davis.

Aycock is now the No. 1 seed and will host a game on Thursday night against an undetermined opponent. Wayne County plays Snow Hill tonight at 7 p.m. at Southern Wayne High School. The loser is eliminated and winner goes on the road Thursday against either North Raleigh or Clayton.
