Spring Creek 11th in final state Wachovia Cup standings

Spring Creek High School finished 11th overall in the Class 1-A North Carolina High School Athletic Association's final standings in the state Wachovia Cup competitions for the 2003-2004 school year.

The Wachovia Cup award, sponsored by Wachovia Bank, N.A., and the NCHSAA, recognizes the high schools that achieve the best overall interscholastic athletic performance within each of the state's four competitive classifications. The Wachovia Cup program is in its 25th year.

Durham School of the Arts reclaimed the 1-A cup, beating out perennial power Hendersonville.

In the 2-A classification, Charlotte Catholic secured its sixth straight Wachovia Cup. Greene Central finished 15th overall.

Monroe Weddington inched past East Chapel Hill in the 3-A classification to break the Wildcats' five-year hold on the Cup.

In the 4-A classification, Charlotte Providence clinched the top spot over Southeast Raleigh.

Wachovia Cup points are determined by a system based on performance in state-championship events. All schools that finish in the top eight positions (plus ties) earn points. In the playoff events involving teams from more than one classification, Wachovia Cup points are awarded based on the school's standing against other schools in its own classification. If fewer than eight schools from a classification compete in a sport, only those schools that are represented are eligible to receive the Wachovia Cup points.

Points are awarded for all sports as follows: 50 for first, 45 for second, 40 for third, 35 for fourth, 30 for fifth, 25 for sixth, 20 for seventh, 15 for eighth. In the event of a tie, the schools receive an equal number of points based on the number of teams that finish higher in the standings. Five points are awarded for each sanctioned sport in which a school competes.

Wachovia Conference Cup final standings announced

CHAPEL HILL -- The North Carolina High School Athletic announced the final standings in the Wachovia Conference Cup competitions for the 2003-2004 academic year.

The Wachovia Conference Cup, sponsored annually by Wachovia and sanctioned by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, recognizes high school sports programs that achieve the best overall performance within their respective athletic conferences.

In most conferences, points are awarded based on participation and standings in conference play. Each conference determines its own method of awarding points.

Area Wachovia Confernce Cup final standings:

Carolina 1-A: Clinching the top spot in men's track, Rosewood took first place. Farmville Central landed in the runner-up position. Conference standings: Rosewood 65, Farmville Central 59.5, Spring Creek 53, North Johnston 50.5, Ayden-Grifton 42, Princeton 36.5 and North Duplin 21.5.

Super Six 1-A: Bringing home conference titles in baseball and men's and women's track, Wallace-Rose Hill clinched the top spot. Midway was the runner-up in softball and placed first in men's golf to take second place. Conference standings: Wallace-Rose Hill 87, Midway 79, James Kenan 75.5, Union 73.5, Lakewood 70 and Hobbton 62.

Eastern Plains 2-A: A strong spring season allowed Southwest Edgecombe to clinch first. North Lenoir slid into second place. Conference standings: Southwest Edgecombe 74.25, North Lenoir 68.75, Greene Central 61.25, South Lenoir 57.75, Tarboro 48 and North Pitt 40.5.

Eastern Carolina 3-A: West Carteret clinched the cup by finishing first in five sports. C.B. Aycock remained in second after placing first in softball and tying for first in women's soccer. Conference standings: West Carteret 256, C.B. Aycock 237.2, Eastern Wayne 229.5, Washington 176.5, South Central 174.5, Southern Wayne 167.2, Kinston 161, West Craven 132 and Goldsboro 26.7.
