District tournaments -- Wayne County 10s baseball falls, 12s softball wins

The Babe Ruth District 4 baseball tournaments got underway Tuesday after rain pushed back the start of play.
The 10-and-under group began its tournament play in Maury, with Wilson County West topping Johnston County 3-2. Justin Waddell went 2-for-3 for Wilson West. Dustin Alford and Alex Nguyen combined on the mound to get the victory. Wesley Mangum was 2-for-4 to pace Johnston County.
In the other 10-and-under game, Greene County came back from an 11-8 deficit with four runs in the last inning to beat Wayne County 12-11. Landon Elmore was 2-for-4 in the game, while Brantley Moye and Tucker Jones both had doubles and Rashead Yelverton had a triple for Greene County. Wayne County's Marcus Jones had a double.
Over at Greene Central High School, the 11-year-olds began their best-of-three series with Wilson County knocking off Wayne County 11-3. Wesley Brewer pitched a complete game for Wilson County, allowing four hits. Lloyd Davis had three hits and Cory Nygard and Aaron White both had two hits for Wilson.
In the 12-year-old bracket, Wayne County picked up nine runs in the final inning to blow out Johnston County 15-3. Lose Ponce was Wayne County's only player to get more than one hit, going 2-for-3. Benton Myers and Dillon Daughtery both had two hits for Johnston County.

Wayne 12s open with win
KINSTON -- Wayne County's 12-year-old Babe Ruth all-stars opened District 8 tournament play with a 9-3 win over Lenoir County East Tuesday.
Mary-Kate Cole had two hits, one a double, to pace Wayne County. Taylor White had a pair of hits for Lenoir County East.
Wayne County's Autumn Pittman struck out three and allowed one hit, while Morgan Davis did not give up a run in two innings of relief work.
Wayne County takes on Greene County tonight at 4 p.m. in a second round game.
