Jackson, Humphrey are Miss Softball runners-up

Charles B. Aycock junior pitcher Jenny Jackson and North Lenoir senior pitcher Hermia Humphrey were announced as runner-ups in their respective classifications for Miss Softball in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association for the 2004 season.

This year, three of the winners from the season before repeated as selections and all four winners are seniors.

Coaches and members of the media nominated the finalists. A group of prep media then voted on the finalists ballot, selecting a first, second and third place player.

In 3-A, Southern Alamance graduate and N.C. State signee Brooke Isley won the award, holding off runner-up Lauren Caviness from Harnett Central

Jackson, who led Aycock to an Eastern Carolina Conference championship and into the second round of the playoffs, was named a runner-up along with Caviness, Emily Forbes (St. Stephens) Katie Miller (Manteo) and Cassie Palmer (Weddington).

Humphrey, a key cog in the wheel of North Lenoir's run to the NCHSAA Final Four at Walnut Creek, finished as a runner-up to state-champion Forbush pitcher Hannah Angel.

Angel and her Forbush teammates joined North Brunswick as the only softball teams to ever win three consecutive state championships.

Humphrey, who has signed to play at Pitt Community College next season, was joined by Cagney Davis (East Rutherford), Erica Brown (Randleman), Liz Hatcher (East Duplin) and Hannah Wall (Eastern Guilford) as runners-up.
