Kinston continues losing skid on the road

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Myrtle Beach took advantage of some eighth-inning heroics to down the Kinston Indians by the final score of 8-5 Saturday evening at Coastal Federal Field.

Trailing 5-4 with one out on the scoreboard and the bases loaded, Jonathan Schuerholz roped a single to right center to score both the tying and winning runs.

The Pelicans got on the board first and took an early 3-0 lead with RBIs from Jeff Francoeur, Brian McCann and Carlos Duran in the bottom of the first. The Indians cut the lead to 3-1 in the top of the third on a Michael Aubrey RBI single, and then tied the game in the top of the fourth with two more runs.

Heading into the bottom of the eighth, the Pelicans found themselves trailing 5-4. McCann led the inning off with a single, followed by a Ben Thomas walk and then a Carlos Duran single to load the bases. Schuerholz then stepped to the plate to deliver the decisive base hit that gave the Pelicans their victory.

Wes Timmons' single later in the inning gave Myrtle Beach two more runs.

Matt Merricks got the start for the Pelicans, going 5.1 innings, allowing three runs on five hits. Sean White (1-1) picked up the win, while Ryan Basner pitched a perfect ninth for his sixth save of the season.

Matt Davis (2-1) got the loss for the Indians as he allowed the final four Myrtle Beach runs.

Kyle Davies collected his fourth straight victory on the mound Friday in a 5-2 win against the K-Tribe. Davis (8-2) yielded two runs on five hits and struck out nine.

Kinston got on the scoreboard first in the top of the fourth inning with Ryan Garko's 12th home run of the year, a solo shot, to put the Indians up 1-0.

Myrtle Beach answered in the bottom of the fourth with three runs to go on top 3-1. Two of the three runs scored on a Luis Hernandez triple and the final scored on an Onil Joseph single to left.

The Pelicans added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth on a double by Jonathan Schuerholz that scored Alonzo Ruelas and Carlos Duran to give Myrtle Beach a 5-1 lead. In the top of the seventh, the Indians their second and final run of the game on a Mayobanex Santana RBI single.

Glenn Tucker recorded his team-leading ninth save of the season by pitching a perfect ninth inning.

K-Tribe starter Dan Denham (7-4) was saddled with the loss as he allowed five runs on six hits and four walks.

The teams conclude their three-game series today.
