MOC sports -- EW's Mewborn among softball recruits

MOUNT OLIVE -- Second-year Mount Olive College softball coach Jamie Kylis announced Wednesday the signing of three eastern North Carolina recruits.

Bailey Harrell and Ashley Mewborn have each signed National Letters of Intent. Kristen Tettemer of Newport has also committed to play for the Trojans next season.

Harrell is a four-time all-conference catcher and two-time area Most Valuable Player at Kinston High School. Behind the plate, she threw out 74 percent of the runners attempting to steal during her four-year high school career. Harrell also lettered in swimming, tennis and volleyball, and was twice named her school's top female athlete. Academically, she graduated with honors and was named to the National Honor Society.

"Bailey plays with a high level of intensity and I believe she can make an immediate impact for us," said Kylis. "She brings a sound game behind the plate and can also add power to our offense. I am excited to have her join Mount Olive's softball program."

Mewborn hit .283 and earned all-conference honors during her senior season at Eastern Wayne, where she split time between second base and shortstop. She is a two-time all-area selection and was named team MVP in her senior year. She has also helped lead her 18-under travel ball team to a record of 66-22.

"Ashley is very versatile from both sides of the plate and has great speed, so she will be a great offensive threat for us," said Kylis. "Defensively, she'll contribute to our infield, as well as see some time in the outfield."

Tettemer hit .393 in her senior year at Croatan High School, where she was a two-time all-conference selection. She scored 17 runs and had 19 stolen bases in 20 games this past season. Tettemer is also expected to see time in the outfield and middle infield.

"A utility player like Kristen doesn't come along very often," said Kylis. "She has great speed and is versatile at the plate. I look forward to Kristen coming in and learning from our returnees, as well as taking a leadership role among our freshman class."
