Snow Hill loses to Pitt County East

SNOW HILL -- Snow Hill Post 94 opened defense of its Area I South Division title with a 3-2 loss against Pitt County Post 39 on the James R. Fulghum Athletic Complex diamond Tuesday evening.
Post 94 stranded 15 runners and struck out 12 times in the regulation nine-inning contest.
"We had plenty of opportunities," veteran Snow Hill coach James "Rabbit" Fulghum said.
Pitt County (4-1) built a 3-0 lead by scoring a single run in each of the third, seventh and ninth innings. Snow Hill starter Blake Herring worked seven full innings and took the mound in the eighth, but departed after issuing his fourth walk. A rising sophomore at Lenoir Community College, Herring yielded eight hits and fanned five Post 39 batters.
Post 39 capitalized on six Post 94 errors, including two in the top half of the ninth.
Snow Hill avoided the shutout with a two-run outburst in its final at-bat.
Jon Allen Conway led Post 94 with three hits in five plate appearances. Joe Wade and Chip Wall each contributed two hits.
Post 94 entertains division leader New Bern at 7 p.m. today. Post 24 knocked Wayne County from the unbeaten ranks with a come-from-behind 9-8 victory Tuesday.
