Wayne Post breezes past Benson

FOUR OAKS -- Jes Snyder and Erik Lovett each belted a home run, and Ashton Langston threw four solid innings as Wayne County Post 11 hammered Benson 16-6 in an Area I non-division American Legion contest Tuesday evening.

Snyder ripped his solo homer in a four-run uprising in the first inning. Lovett, who batted 1-for-3 and walked twice, blasted a three-run shot in the eighth inning.

Post 11 banged out 11 hits overall and capitalized on seven Benson errors.

Langston yielded two hits and fanned one Benson hitter in a four-inning stint. Philip Cunningham threw two perfect innings, striking out four and picked up the win in relief.

Garrett Sutton, Lovett and Jesse Lancaster combined to record five strikeouts in three innings on the mound.

Seven of nine Wayne County starters had at least one hit in the nine-inning affair. Snyder, Philip Pennington and David Combs each had two hits and combined for five RBI.

Wayne County (2-0) continues play today with a road contest at Chapel Hill Post 6. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at Boshamer Stadium on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus.

LAGRANGE -- Chris Massey collected two hits and scored an early-inning run as Wayne County nipped Lenoir County 3-1 in an American Junior Legion baseball contest Tuesday at North Lenoir High School.

John Yates, T.J. Hinson and Austin Hood each added a hit for Wayne County, which won its first game in two outings this season. Post 11 continues play at home tonight against in-county rival Pikeville.

Hinson plated Wayne County's first run with a sacrifice fly in the first inning.

The North Lenoir pitching staff accounted for the second run by hitting a Post 11 batter with the bases loaded in the second. Hood provided the third run with a fielder's choice groundout.

Evan Cavanaugh emerged the winning pitcher in relief with five strikeouts in 3-plus innings. He yielded one run (unearned) on two hits and walked two.

Pikeville cruises

past Winterville

PIKEVILLE -- Bennett Jeffreys provided three hits and Jackson Massey smacked a home run as Pikeville eased past Winterville 7-3 in an American Junior Legion baseball game Tuesday at Charles B. Aycock.

Jeffreys also doubled in four plate appearances, while Massey batted 2-for-4 and drove in two runs.

Thomas Pilkington added two hits and two RBI. Will Spence contributed two hits and an RBI for Pikeville, which remained unbeaten in three outings.

Pilkington claimed the pitching win, allowing three hits in 41Ú3 innings. Chris King collected five strikeouts in one-plus innings of work and Brandon Price threw the seventh.

Winterville had four hits -- all singles.

Pikeville travels to Southern Wayne tonight for a battle against in-county rival Southern Wayne. Game time is 7 p.m. at the Doyle Whitfield Athletic Complex.

Snow Hill falls

to Pitt County West

WINTERVILLE -- Lance Murray emerged Snow Hill's offensive leader with two hits in a 6-3, non-division loss Tuesday evening against Pitt County West.

Michael Speedy endured the pitching loss, giving up five runs (all earned) on 10 hits in a four-inning stint. He struck out four West batters.

Jordan Corbett pitched two innings in relief.

Snow Hill (2-1) entertains Pitt County West at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Boys Club 9-10

Mustangs 16, Wolfpack 9 -- Nolan James batted 3-for-4 and emerged the winning pitcher for the Mustangs. William Winslow paced the Wolfpack's attack with two hits in three plate appearances. The Mustangs remained unbeaten in seven games, while the Wolfpack dropped to 4-3.
