Parrish repeats as All Amercian; three Trojans on all-region team

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Steve Parrish was named to the Rawlings/ABCA Division II Baseball All-America Second Team and Brian Corbett, Ricky Duke and Craig Hurba earned All-South Atlantic Region second team honors, it was announced at the NCAA Division II Baseball National Championship in Montgomery. The selections were made by member coaches of the American Baseball Coaches Association.

Parrish, a senior designated hitter from Fremont, hit .404 with 19 home runs and 71 runs batted in. Parrish ranks ninth in the nation in home runs per game, 18th in RBI per game and 14th in slugging percentage (.823). Parrish hit three home runs in one game, sparking a streak of four consecutive games with a home run. He had a 21-game hitting streak during the season as he hit safely in 36 of 38 games during one stretch.

Parrish drove in seven runs in one game and also had a six-RBI performance. Parrish was named to the All-South Atlantic Region first team and earned All-Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference first team honors.

Corbett, a junior pitcher from Marion, S.C., posted a 5-1 record with two saves and a 4.12 earned run average. His 76 strikeouts ranked first in the CVAC as he averaged 9.20 strikeouts per nine innings. Corbett had a 10-strikeout performance this season and also recorded nine strikeouts in a game. He was named to the All-CVAC first team and was a two-time CVAC Pitcher of the Week this season.

Duke, a junior pitcher from Grove City, Ohio, was named Most Valuable Player of the 2004 CVAC Baseball Tournament after posting a 2-0 record in the tourney and registering a complete game victory over nationally 15th-ranked Pfeiffer in the championship game. Duke finished the season with a record of 11-1, tying for seventh in the nation in total wins.

His .917 winning percentage is tied for fourth-highest in the nation among pitchers with at least 10 decisions. Duke also posted a complete game victory over North Florida, which was ranked as No. 4 in the national poll. Duke was named to the All-CVAC first team.

Hurba, a catcher from Maryland, N.Y., is ranked among the nation's leaders in three offensive categories. Hurba ranks 21st in home runs per game and ninth in runs batted in per game. His .765 slugging percentage is the 23rd-highest in the nation. Hurba hit safely in 45 of 52 games this season, including a 16-game hitting streak. He earned All-Tournament honors at the CVAC Baseball Tournament, driving in six runs in Mount Olive's first-round win over Erskine and collecting five hits in the Trojans' second-round win over Limestone. Hurba had 22 multi-hit games, including a five-hit, eight-RBI performance against Shepherd. Hurba was named to the All-CVAC second team.

Mount Olive finished the 2004 season with a record of 37-15 and won the CVAC Baseball Tournament championship. The Trojans are ranked No. 25 in the most recent Collegiate Baseball Division II National Poll and have been ranked as high as No. 15 this season.
