WCDS tennis completes season

Wayne Country Day School completed a strong season of boys tennis with a fourth-place finish in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association state tournament, held at Barton College last weekend. The Chargers ended up tied with Trinity Academy of Raleigh.

Three Wayne Country Day players -- David Wilson, Alex Primos and George Mayo - all advanced to the semifinals of their seeded draws. Proimos and Mayo both finished in third place as the result of defaults in their consolation matches, while Wilson fell in his consolation match and finished fourth.

No. 1 flight player Ross Wilson split his tournament matches, beating Wayne Christian's Jake Crouthamel 6-1, 6-2 in the opening match and losing to Gaston Day's David Hannon.

No. 3 flight player Chad Roberson won his opener in three sets but lost to the tournament's top-seeded player in that flight in his next match. No. 5 Byron Bryan lost his opening match to second-seeded Gary Saunders of Greenfield School.

In doubles, No. 2 flighted Ross Wilson and Proimos knocked off a Trinity academy duo before falling to Statesville Christian. Luxman Srikantha and Brian Brock lost their opening match to a Statesville Christian team, while David Wilson and Roberson fell in a three-set contest to a duo from Rocky Mount Academy.

"I am very proud of the progress these boys have made since the beginning of the season," said Charger tennis coach Jo Ann Logan. "The majority of the team had never played a competitive match. Some had never played tennis. They not only become competitive by the end of the year but also sent a message that next season they will be even tougher.

"This team was a pleasure to coach. They performed on the court and were great ambassadors for Wayne Country Day and for Wayne County."
