1-A track regional sees several to state meet

Rosewood High School's boys track team finally loosened its grip on the 1-A regional track trophy Saturday, but all the area teams fared well at Saturday's N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1-A Mid-East regional meet held at Rosewood High School.

The Eagles, three-time regional champions, competed hard but finished in third place in the team standings with 72 points. Wallace-Rose Hill claimed the regional team title with 100 points, followed by Super Six Conference foe Union with 83.5. Farmville Central was fourth with 70 points.

The top four finishers in each event qualified for Saturday's state 1-A championship meet at N.C. State University's Paul Derr track.

Rosewood's boys were led by Javon Williams, who finished with a pair of second-place finishes in the 100 and 200 meter races. James and Jeremy Reusch both had top five finishes in the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles events, and James Reusch was third in the long jump. Michael Spriggs was third in the discus. Rosewood's 160 meter relay team finished third in their event, cementing the Eagles' third-place team finish.

North Johnston was sixth overall with 42 points. Jonathan Arthur and Lawrence Mongaro went 1-2 in the pole vault to key the Panthers' team finish. Casey Hughes was third in the 400.

Spring Creek's boys got a strong performance from McKenzie Jones and finished in eighth place with 26 points. Jones won the long jump and was third in the 100 and 200 meter races. Jordan Potter was fifth in the discus for the Gators.

North Duplin was 11th, as John Williams was fourth in the 1600 and qualified for the state meet.

For the girls, Durham School for the Arts locked up its fourth straight regional title in grand style. The Bulldogs scored 187 points, 125 more than runner-up Princeton.

Summer Graham brought home two titles for Princeton, winning the 1600 and 3200. Graham will be a favorite in those events at the state meet. Teammate C.C. Sanders won the 100 hurdles and was fourth in the high jump and Heather Braswell was fourth in the 400.

Rosewood's girls finished in fourth place, as Kortne Muntz and Erica Murray finished second and third in the pole vault; Heather Murray was fourth in the long jump and the 300 hurdles; Kerry Garner was fifth in the high jump and sixth in the long jump; and Sa'Coya Cox was fourth in the 100.

North Duplin ended up fifth as Amy Arthur was second to Graham in both the 1600 and 3200. North Johnston took sixth place as Ashley Sharpe won the pole vault.

James Kenan's Sareece Armwood won the shot put for the Tigers, pacing an eighth-place finish. Spring Creek's girls were 15th
