WASHINGTON -- Another one-run decision.

This time, however, the outcome favored Washington as it knocked off previously-unbeaten Charles B. Aycock 1-0 in the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference regular-season finale for both teams Thursday.

Aycock, the state's top-ranked team in the ihigh.com/coaches and media poll, had its 27-game ECC win streak snapped. The Golden Falcons carry a 19-1 record into next Friday's state-playoff opener against the Big Eight South runner-up.

"We got people on base, we got them in scoring position, but then Jeri (Bell) just clamped down on us," Aycock coach David West said. "She showed why she is as good as she is."

Bell limited the Golden Falcons to four hits and recorded eight strikeouts in a complete-game effort. West's team stranded six base runners.

Washington (19-3) collected the game-winning run in the second inning.

Meredith Knox ripped a one-out triple. Sarah Faucett followed with a bunt and the Aycock defense threw the ball away. Knox, who finished the night with two hits, scooted home for the 1-0 lead.

Aycock hurler Jenny Jackson suffered her first loss in 18 outings. The junior right-hander fanned seven Pam Pack batters, walked one and yielded the unearned run on two hits.

"It was a great performance by both pitchers," West said.

Jackson led the Golden Falcon offense with two hits. Jennifer Williamson and Chrissy Setliff each batted 1-for-3.
